It was more like a pat on the back than a slap on the wrist.

In fact, NASCAR practically gave Carl Edwards a "high-five" Tuesday afternoon in handing out a meager, guess-we-gotta-do-something, three-race probation to the high wattage driver for his dangerous on-track retaliation Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Footage of Edwards intentionally wrecking Brad Keselowski late in Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race -- Keselowski's car launched in the air and slammed down on the retaining wall -- has made the network news and piqued interest overseas.

Even the tabloid show Inside Edition was asking NASCAR President Mike Helton questions after his announcement that Edwards would not face any severe penalties for his high speed "gotcha".

Part of what makes this case both rare and interesting is that there has been so much outrage and so many calls for a driver to be suspended for his actions on-track.

Edwards Certainly Not First to Cause Intentional Crash

Carl Edwards, undoubtedly, is getting quite the bad rap this week after his move that wrecked Brad Keselowski Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Let's be real -- when you send a fellow competitor flying through the air and smashing dangerously into the outside wall, a lot of folks aren't going to be taking your side. That's exactly what Edwards -- regardless of what his original intent was -- did Sunday.

But before we condemn Edwards for his intentional act, let us not forget that Mr. Ed himself (just ask Kyle Busch about that nickname) is far, far from being the first NASCAR driver to ever wreck someone intentionally. And, thanks to the wonders of YouTube, you'll get to relive just a few of those moments from the comfort of your computer chair.

NASCAR an Unlikely Accomplice to Edwards' Crime

Carl Edwards rammed his car into another vehicle Sunday. In the real world, that's called road rage.

In the NASCAR world, that's called "a good time."

That's why it would be an injustice if Edwards (left) is sent to the pits for the next race. He should be sent to jail for what he did to Brad Keselowski. And NASCAR should be charged with aiding and abetting.

It's always a good time until somebody loses an eye or a leg or a family member. Nobody was killed at the Kobalt Tools 500, but Edwards would have been arrested if he'd pulled that stunt on I-85.

It would be dicey legal territory, but I'd like a prosecutor to at least try to bust a driver who's as patently guilty of reckless driving as Edwards.

And what if Keselowski had been killed or his car had flown into the stands? Would the courts just look the other way?

I couldn't get a response from the Henry County District Attorney's office Monday. There is no simple answer to the question of when violence in sports becomes criminal. If I'm a prosecutor, however, I'd like my chances against Edwards.

Sport Reacts in Wake of Edwards-Keselowski Dust-Up

While the verdict is still out from NASCAR officials on whether to penalize Carl Edwards for a dangerous retaliatory crash he caused late in Sunday's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, there has been plenty of judgment rendered elsewhere.

Opinions have varied from those calling for Edwards' suspension to others shrugging off the whole matter with a wink-wink, "boys will be boys."

On the far extremes, fan reaction on FanHouse has ranged from calls for this to be considered a criminal matter to those who think Edwards' target, the young driver Brad Keselowski, "had it coming.''

Still many others are convinced NASCAR is privately enjoying the whole dust-up and will use this as a publicity stunt to promote its next race, two weeks from now, at the traditionally action-packed half-mile, Bristol, Tenn., bullring.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Monday that if there is any further action -- "if" being the significant word -- it wouldn't be announced until Tuesday, possibly Wednesday.

NASCAR Has to Draw the Line

NASCAR told its drivers to "have at it" this season. After all, what's a little bumping and heavy banging in the name of television ratings, improved attendance and high marks on fan surveys, right?

Four races into the season, however, even NASCAR has had to draw the line somewhere.

Call it unintended consequences or simply a case of mixed messages. But NASCAR, Edwards and Brad Keselowski, who was on the receiving end of Edwards' retaliatory 180-mph temper tantrum, are very lucky someone didn't get seriously injured.

Running 156 laps down -- yes, 156 laps down -- Edwards intentionally turned his Ford into Keselowski's sixth-place Dodge with seven laps remaining in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Kurt Busch Wins Again at Atlanta After Two Crashes

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) -- Kurt Busch survived a couple of restarts and 16 extra laps to win again Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a race marred by accusations of an intentional crash that sent a car hurtling toward the main stands upside down.

Busch won the spring race at the 1.54-mile trioval for the second year in a row, beating Matt Kenseth to the line by nearly half a second. Juan Pablo Montoya was third, followed by Kasey Kahne and Paul Menard.

The race went 341 laps instead of its scheduled 325 because of two big crashes. The first one drew the most attention.

Carl Edwards, running 156 laps behind, clipped Brad Keselowski and caused his car to spin, then lift into the air at around 190 mph. It smashed into the barrier in front of the stands roof-first, then flipped back onto the track right side up. Keselowski was OK, but NASCAR ordered Edwards to park his car and summoned him to its trailer for a tongue-lashing.

Teammate Crashes are Nothing New for NASCAR

As expected, word came from Juan Pablo Montoya's camp this week that he and teammate Jamie McMurray have settled their differences after McMurray wrecked both out of last Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Montoya said McMurray sent him an apologetic text message and Montoya accepted -- coining the situation as one the drivers have to move past, autosport.com reported. Of course, it's rare, really, that drivers -- and especially teammates -- fail to openly "make up" over the next week, even if both are still (and likely are) fuming over the dustup.

In the case of the Earnhardt-Ganassi teammates, this isn't their first run-in involving spinning race cars and bent sheet metal during their NASCAR careers, and for NASCAR as a whole, it certainly wasn't the first time -- and definitely not the last -- that on-track action between teammates has ended in a smoking mess.

Here's a few of the best recent teammate vs. teammate crashes -- and one that stretches back to 1995.

On the Straightaway!

Race: 2005 Coca-Cola 600, Charlotte
Team: Dale Earnhardt Inc.
Drivers: Dale Earnhardt Jr. & Michael Waltrip
Scene: With 156 laps to go in NASCAR's longest race, Waltrip & Earnhardt Jr. run 7th and 8th. Then, Earnhardt Jr. gets a run on Waltrip, clips the No. 15, and around they go.

Waltrip left DEI at the end of 2005.

Greg Biffle & Carl Edwards Just Don't Get Along

Race: 2008 AMP Energy 500, Talladega
Team: Roush Fenway Racing
Drivers: Greg Biffle & Carl Edwards
Scene: With each driver trying to supplant Jimmie Johnson as the next Sprint Cup champion, a lot was on the line for a good finish at Talladega. Perhaps that contributed to Carl Edwards doing a little bit of overzealous bump drafting as the laps wound down.

The result? A big crash, and Jimmie Johnson continued to his third-straight title.

Carl Edwards Part II: Intimidation Factor

Scene: I realize that tagging someone with the word "intimidating" might have a few black No. 3 fans up in arms, but in this video -- the lone video that is more focused on post-race actions than what happened on track -- I can't help but be scared of Carl Edwards and his camouflage shorts.

You can bet Matt Kenseth felt the same way.

Stewart Blames Hamlin for Leading

Race: 2007 Pepsi 400, Daytona
Team: Joe Gibbs Racing
Drivers: Tony Stewart & Denny Hamlin
Scene: In what remains one of the biggest mysteries of NASCAR, Tony Stewart somehow managed to blame Denny Hamlin for this Daytona incident that wiped out both Joe Gibbs Racing drivers in the early stages of 2007 Pepsi 400.

Hamlin, the leader, get bumped by Stewart in second -- sending both into the turn four wall in a crash that collected Dale Earnhardt Jr. The Daytona crowd wasn't pleased.

Jeff Gordon Gives Ken Schrader a Shiner

Race:1995 DieHard 500, Talladega
Team: Hendrick Motorsports
Drivers: Jeff Gordon & Ken Schrader
Scene: Consider this from the way-back file, as we dig into the days of Richard Petty working as a race commentator. With about 50 to go, the non-champion version of Jeff Gordon (he won his first in 1995) gets into Ken Schrader's No. 25 Budweiser machine, spinning the Budweiser Chevrolet around before Schrader takes a wild tumble in the backstretch grass. If you're so inclined, the very same car is still on display at the Hendrick Motorsports museum.

Schrader's biggest injury from the crash was a nasty black eye that he reveals in the interview at the end of the video -- a NASCAR moment worth waiting for.

Red Bull Gives You... Teammate Arguments

Race: 2009 Camping World 200, New Hampshire
Team: Team Red Bull
Drivers: Brian Vickers & Scott Speed
Scene: In one of the more unusual teammate disputes, Vickers and Speed showed that a bit of tension simmered under the surface of their Sprint Cup Series team when they had issues during a Nationwide race. Sure, this might be a stretch because they were driving for competing teams during this Nationwide race, but just hours later they were competing under the same Red Bull colors.

Me? I'm just confused as to why Vickers wasn't mad at himself for getting loose.

Stewart Wins -- Again -- in Nationwide Race at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- At some point, the folks at Daytona International Speedway might have to start etching Tony Stewart's name in the February Nationwide Series race trophy before they drop the green flag.

Stewart won Saturday's Drive4COPD 300 at the famous 2.5-mile track, holding off last lap charges by Justin Allgaier and Carl Edwards, to take his fifth win in his last six tries in the Nationwide season-opener.

Edwards finished second, Kevin Harvick third, Allgaier fourth and Brian Vickers fifth.

What, exactly is Stewart's secret of success?

"I wish I knew because I'd sell it to somebody," Stewart said in Daytona's victory lane, the 15th time he's been there in his career. "We've just been so fortunate so many times. As much as I'd love to say that I'm really that good, there's a lot of luck that goes into winning these things."

The Day Before the Twins

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The momentum is picking up at Daytona International Speedway as Speedweeks rushes toward Sunday's Daytona 500, the first race of the season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Here's another photo gallery of sights and scenes around the speedway on Wednesday, the day before the Gatorade Duels twin 150-mile qualifying race.

In between practice sessions on the track, and today's races, the drivers are slammed with other obligations. As Tony Stewart told the audience Wednesday evening during Performance Radio Network's Up To Speed - Daytona Beach radio show at Volusia Mall, 10 percent of his job is a blast and the other 90 percent is a job and not always so fun.

It has been extraordinarily chilly down here thus far, with temperatures 15 degrees or more below normal, and rain is predicted for Friday, but it's still more comfortable than a lot of places around the country and if the temperatures aren't really heating up, the excitement is.

FanHouse 2009 Cup Rewind: Carl Edwards, 11th

THE SEASON: Just as fellow 2008 frontrunner Kyle Busch did, Carl Edwards was nowhere near what most expected par to be for driver No. 99 in 2009. But unlike Busch, Edwards still managed to earn a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup -- though it didn't amount to much.

Edwards began 2009 as the driver that annoyed Jimmie Johnson the most. After racking up a series-high 9 race wins in 2008, most of the motorsports media looked to Edwards as the guy that would play out 2009 as the championship favorite, dethroning Johnson after three straight titles.

Obviously, such predictions were nothing but off.

Aside from the two wins teammate Matt Kenseth lined up to start the 2009 season, Edwards and the rest of Roush-Fenway Racing team failed to earn another checkered flag for the organization that came the closest to topling Johnson in 2008. Such struggles were a big surprise.

A seven-race stretch in the spring of 2009 starting at Bristol watched Edwards manage a best finish of 10th just twice -- noticeably different from his runner-up 2008 performance. After Bristol in 2008, Edwards picked up a win, 3 top-5s and 4 top-10s in the next seven races.

The tide seemed to have turned after the early season slump as he then rattled off four straight top-10 finishes.

Consistency didn't stick around though, and Edwards limped into the Chase where he was never much of a factor. In fact, Edwards finished in the top-10 just three times during the final ten race run and, when compared to last season, such stats are a polar opposite. Johnson beat Edwards by just 69 points in 2008 after Edwards had 8 top-5s in the Chase.

Another stat to recognize how far Edwards was off from 2008? He led over 1,000 less laps in 2009 compared to 2008.

THE STATISTICS:
Best Finish - 2nd, Pocono
Worst Finish - 39th, twice
Top-5s - 7
Top-10s - 14
Total Laps Led - 164
Percent of Laps Completed - 97.4

THE FUTURE: The stats didn't lie for Edwards in 2009.

Compared with 2008, the 1,000 less laps led, 12 less top-5s, 13 less top-10s and -- most notably -- 9 less wins made a marked difference on Edwards postseason competitiveness. He just wasn't a factor.

2010, though, needs to be a huge step forward for the No. 99 team. Edwards has been rumored to have one of the steepest sponsor costs in the sport -- something that's easy to pull when you're winning 9 races a year.

But AFLAC certainly is going to want to see a little more bang for its buck and Edwards -- naturally one of NASCAR's hottest driver commodities with his marketability and driving talents -- will need to see improvement from his Roush team.

Jamie McMurray's race team will no longer exist within the confines of RFR to due NASCAR's limit on team numbers coming to fruition, which should shift a few of RFR's better resources to the remaining four cars in the operation. One would think such a move would help in an era of extremely limited track testing.

Expect Edwards to be a Chase driver once again, but we should know early on in 2010 if he'll be a championship contender again.

Well, there you have it.

We, as NASCAR fans in 2009, have seen something that has never been done before in the 61 years of NASCAR competition, and something that could very easily not happen for another 161 years if this sport lasts that long.

Yep, Jimmie Johnson -- the smooth-drivin' Californian -- is the first guy in all of NASCAR's moonshining and intimidating history to take four straight championships at any level. But, strangely, he's not the first to do so in a major stock car racing series.

Unfortunately, the most recent data we have from Phoenix International Raceway doesn't leave a lot of hope that we'll be seeing the unforeseen Sunday afternoon at the 1-miler.

Ladies and gentleman, there was nothing wrong with last week's race at Talladega -- if you ask Tony Stewart or NASCAR.

This week, each of them blamed the fan uproar solely on the media (mainly ESPN) for ultimately putting such ideas about the bad racing at Talladega into the heads of fans. Race fans, Stewart and NASCAR feel, were induced with propaganda by television to believe that they were getting shafted by NASCAR.

Despite Precautions, Talladega Remains Wild Ride

Depending on your perspective, Ryan Newman either had the best seat in the house or the worst during NASCAR's last visit to the mighty and unpredictable Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

Carl Edwards, Sprint Cup rookie Brad Keselowski and Newman were 100 yards in front of the checkered flag, set to decide the winner amongst themselves, when Keselowski and Edwards collided directly in front of Newman. Edwards' Ford went airborne, bounced off the hood and windshield of Newman's Chevy, then flew into the fencing along the front stretch grandstands in a horrific-looking accident that led the country's sports highlight reels.

If you haven't seen the video, you will. It'll be played over and over and over all weekend as the Sprint Cup Series makes its Chase for the Championship visit to Talladega this week.

Keselowski Holds Off Busch in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Brad Keselowski held off points leader Kyle Busch on the final lap to win the Kroger On Track For the Cure 250 in a green-white-checker finish in Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Keselowski was leading when a caution came out with two laps to go because Stephen Wallace spun after tangling with Matt Kenseth. Wallace banged into Kenseth's car after the race and the two had words on pit road.

Keselowski held onto the lead through the overtime segment. Busch finished second and leads Carl Edwards by 215 points in the standings.

Sprint Cup N's & Q's: Kansas 400

If there was any doubt about the impact of clean air in NASCAR, Kansas Speedway pretty much cleared it up.

Simply, the undisturbed air that the leader has on the front nose of his race car gives a decided handling advantage. And don't just ask Tony Stewart, but ask the two other drivers that took two tires during the race's final pit stop on lap 239 -- Kasey Kahne and Jimmie Johnson.

Stewart, who got a jump on the lap 241 restart, got the clean air and held off Jeff Gordon and his four new tires while Kahne and Johnson fell to sixth and ninth respectively.

Pressure? What pressure? Juan Pablo Montoya's run into the Chase for the Sprint Cup is quite the enviable position for most other drivers simply because of the expectations that the former Formula 1 driver has on his back.

25 races and 9,706 miles of racing in 2009 boils down to a 400-lap shootout Saturday night that will make the season for the 12 guys who secure a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. And for the guys that don't, well, just consider it to be the wrong end of a make-or-break scenario.

Four drivers have clinched an entry prior to the green flag, while 8 spots and 11 eligible drivers will steal the show Saturday night in Richmond. A scramble it will be.

Race Fixing or Just Racing?

RICHMOND, Va. -- With all the publicity surrounding allegations of cheating and race fixing in Formula One and drag racing this week, it begs the question, would NASCAR drivers ever purposely "help" a teammate win a race, improve a position or gain in the championship standings?

Is it even wrong? Or is it simply a long-practiced element of competition?

"I've already thought about that in regards to my teammates and if there's anything I can do to help my teammates, I'd do it," said Carl Edwards, who has two Roush Fenway teammates still trying to clinch a spot in the Chase for the Championship in Saturday's Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
