Hendrick Motorsports announced Sunday morning that team owner Rick Hendrick would not be trackside at Homestead Miami Speedway for that afternoon's Ford 400 NASCAR season finale, but instead remained back in Charlotte, N.C., for a family emergency.Hendrick's 29-year-old niece Alesha Gainey is in critical condition at a Charlotte hospital being prepared for a liver transplant, Hendrick Motorsports general manager Marshall Carlson told reporters. Gainey is the daughter of Hendrick's late brother John, who was killed in a plane accident in 2004 along with Hendrick's son Ricky and two other of John Hendrick's daughters.
"Rick's priority at this point is supporting his family,'' Carlson said. "He's so proud of his teams but needs to be with his niece and her family.''
Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson earned his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup championship later in the day, defeating HMS teammate Mark Martin by 141 points. Johnson's title also gives HMS its ninth Cup championship, which ties it with Petty Enterprises for the most in Cup Series history.

I applaud him for putting family first... it is something that is not done often enough in our day and time....
Fred
Holly, you could have gone without mentioning superman in the article!!!
SHE IS IN LOVE WITH SUPERCHEAT JUST LIKE PSYCHO KIM.
It's called freedom of speech you dumb a**es. And I guess 48SUPERCHEAT knows who everyone is inlove with now a days. If I could buy all you people for what you were really worth and sell you for what you thought you were worth I would be rich. Then again I may just goahead and do the world a favor and knock you dumb a**es in the head like your parents should've done!!!!
are you so stupid jeff90proof that every little thing has to be pointed out to you as if you are mentally challenged.. or are you just that drunk.. (oh wait I guess you actyually are)... The article was about Rick missing the race to be with his niece not that SuperPunk was going for his 4th straight.. Many of us applauded Rick for beihng with his NIECE instead of attending the sporting event (to spell it out for you in your apparent fog mr. 90proof, putting family first)It was a HUMAN resourses STORY line and Holly at the end used it to PUT IN YET ANOTHER plug SUPER JERK.. its great that you are a band wagon jumper, you have that right.. however I would rather support a loser than jump on a manufavtured champs bandwagon just to say I picked a winner.. YEA YOU ARE RIGHT some parents should have thumped their kids in the head.. you have chioces mr 90proof, come out of your fog or you seem to be a leading candidate for such an honor...
I was simply saying she could put whatever she wanted in her article because it's hers and thats called freedom of speech. You was the one who said she didn't have to mention superman. And for your information I've always pulled for the Hendrick teams. But I guess you didn't get someone to read that to you from my earlier post. I don't jump from who is doing good today to who is doing good next week. Gordon is the driver of choice and the Hendrick stable. I don't have to hide who I pull for or talk about the drivers of the past.
Yes,Cain and Kim weren't even around when Nascar was about racing, not riding around in the best equipment, superpus.
WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? THE OFFICE OF VITAL STATISTIC?
NASCAR fans are as big a crybabies as the drivers. NHRA drivers do more driving in a 1/4 mile than these guys do for 500 miles. And they do it with class and respect for their fellow drivers.
I suppose that is why John Force was accused earlier this year of intentionally loosing a race...
I love drag racing too, but I'll take IHRA anytime over NHRA. I live in SoCal but IHRA has pro modified and they aren't scared. They still go the full 1/4 mile in nitro cars instead of only 1000ft. NHRA is going downhill, they have a 1000page rule book while IHRA has a 10page book. I wish IHRA would race on the west coast.
I applaud you Mr. H for making the right decision to be with your family instead of at the track. Those that watch this sport knows that it starts with family and you showed that in a big way. Hope your neice will make a full recovery.
Come everyone have a little respect for Rick Hendrick and what he is going through at this point. He has had tragedy in his life after the loss of family and friends in that plane crash. Now I see some just touting negative and disrespectful comments. Show some class and compassion because life is fleeting and we all need to put family first. When it's all said and done in the end money doesn't count family does.
very happy to hear that he put his family first

FROM MR.HENDRICK. FAMILY FIRST!!!!!
YOU'RE A GOOD MAN MR. HENDRICK..
DO THE RIGHT THINGS..
AND GOOD THINGS HAPPEN..
In the end family doesn't matter either. You're dead, I've never heard of anyone coming back and talking about how nice it was to have family at the funeral. It's the PC thing to say but it really doesn't matter.
