CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Former NASCAR champion Bobby Labonte won't race this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway, his best track, because of sponsorship issues at Yates Racing. The team had seven races to sell this season for the No. 96 Ford, and the sponsorship it secured wanted Erik Darnell in the car. The 26-year-old will make his Sprint Cup Series debut at Atlanta, where Labonte has six career victories.
"This is not about Bobby; it's about making sure we have funding for these races,'' Yates co-owner Max Jones said Monday. "If it was about Bobby, I would have just put Erik in the car for the rest of the year. That was hard to convey to Bobby.
"But we have this opportunity to get Erik some races, and that's the business part of this sport. It's challenging.''
Academy Sports & Outdoors will sponsor Darnell for three races, at Atlanta, Talladega and Texas. Northern Tool + Equipment, who sponsored him last season in the Truck Series, will be on the car at New Hampshire and Kansas.
Sponsorship for the other two races Darnell is slated to run was not announced.
Jones said Labonte did not take the decision well.
"I wouldn't have either if I was him,'' Jones said. "He's a class act, he's a professional. I had to explain my side, why I was doing it, and he wasn't happy about it. But he understood, and I respect that.''
Labonte, the 2000 series champion, left Petty Enterprises last season because he was unsure of its long-term stability. He put together a late deal with Hall of Fame Racing, the team owned by San Diego Padres owner Jeff Moorad and president Tom Garfinkel.
Garfinkel and Moorad were able to land a sponsorship deal with Ask.com, one of the only new companies to enter NASCAR since last fall's economic collapse, and then partnered with Yates Racing for equipment and technical support. The Ask.com deal is a one-year deal and covered only 29 of the 36 races.
Jones worked hard to fill the car, but ultimately was able to sell the potential in Darnell over the history of Labonte.
Labonte, who is 45, is in the midst of his sixth winless season. He's 30th in the standings with one top-10 finish this season. Teammate Paul Menard is 32nd in the points with no top-10 finishes. He has full sponsorship from his family's Midwest-based hardware chain.
The team also fielded a car for Travis Kvapil for four races but stopped when no sponsorship was found.
Labonte will return to the car at Richmond, Dover, Fontana, Charlotte and Martinsville.

"This is a move that will be beneficial to Yates Racing surviving this difficult economic time,'' he said in a statement. ``Of course, I'm disappointed that the sponsorship environment is so challenging right now, but I intend to make the most out of the remaining races that I'm behind the wheel.''
Yates Racing is the sister team to powerhouse Roush Fenway Racing, and Jones said he doesn't expect Hall of Fame to be back under the umbrella in 2010. So he's had to approach future planning with a long-range view, which could include Darnell.
Stuck in the RFR development program because sponsorship issues and lack of available seats have slowed his progression, Jones said Darnell has earned this opportunity. He finished fourth in last year's Truck series, where he has two career wins.
He's raced in just 10 of 25 Nationwide Series races this season, but has five top-10 finishes.
Jones worked at Roush Fenway when Darnell won a seat in its development program.
"He deserves this opportunity. He's a really talented race car driver,'' Jones said. "It's taken a lot of guys a long time to move up because of the funding issues, and the opportunities aren't there anymore. Five or six or eight years ago, you could jump from Trucks to Cup.
"Then everything came to a screeching halt a few years ago.''
Although Labonte has not been ruled out for a Yates ride in 2010, Jones said Darnell is in the mix, as is current Roush driver Jamie McMurray.
McMurray is in the final year of his contract with RFR, which must cut down from five to four cars at the end of this season. The organization would like to keep McMurray by moving him to the Yates side of the team but lacks the funding to offer him a contract.
"We still have that opportunity out there to keep Jamie, but we have to find something and right now he's exploring his options,'' Jones said. "We'd love him to be here. We'd love to be a three- or four-car team, but you have to find someone to pay for it.''

Well, Bobby is getting a raw deal and of course it's horrible equipment, but i hope it opens up other doors, such as maybe back with Gibbs or RPM, or i think will land him either at EGR or RCR. All those would be better options than where he is now. But again, another story that broke 4 days ago, and again this website is so damn late to report it. Im sure, in four days or so, it'll report the changes that RCR made yesterday or that Harvick will be staying at RCR next year as he was rumored to be wanting out, but if you learn your Nascar news here, you'll find that out next week!

Well, now sexy, i do have to disagree with you a bit. When Labonte left JGR, his team was underfunded as Gibbs was more concerned with loyalty to Interstate Batteries than he was about going to land new sponsors. Even Yeley tanked at JGR in that same ride and said he didnt have the funding and technology in his car as did Hamlin wiht FedEx and Stewart with Home Depot, and although i believe that, i knew Yeley was a bust and it wouldnt of mattered. Now if you look at Busch and his performance, granted as much as i hate to say this, the guy has talent, but they also brought M&M's on board and right there was more funding for that team and the performance picked up. I do think Bobby made poor choices such as from choosing after Gibbs, he went to Petty instead of going to Ganassi(when they were still good) and then last year when he stayed loyal to Petty and turned down the RCR ride and end up getting booted to Yates Racing. If Bobby is lucky, he may have one more shot, i think either at RCR or EGR, but Gibbs and RPM could come calling, but he better make the right decision because i believe it will be his last chance.

OK CJ, i'll take your word for to a point and that's i can see bobby doing better at rcr because childress is the type that likes his teams to be successfull, but EGR?
That's a big question and a big doubt too. TE do not give a damn anymore or she is unable to. lookwhere the dei teams are. Ganassi teams? even worse. when was last time you remember a ganassi team performing well in nascar other than few top finishes lately for montoya?.
And 2 more questions; who is RPM? Isee that on tools unless you mean richard petty management?
2ns question; how do you fit GIBBS in to a next labonte move? If the gibbs wanted a 4th team they would grabbed keselowsky. If they wanted to get ready of K. BUSH seriously than it would be onm the news by now.Agreed with you not on this news yet, lol.
Last month joe gibbs had a harsh talk with the KB, but will that make a defference stil the question. The sponsors have been pressuring the gibbs i heard.
take care.

Bobby was able to secure a 7 race ride with another team.
Per FoxSports:
After Labonte was dismissed from his driving duties for seven of the remaining 12 races in the No. 96 Hall of Fame Racing/Yates Racing Ford, the 2000 Cup champ has agreed to pilot the No. 71 Chevrolet for TRG Motorsports in those seven events starting this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Actually, i was hoping Red Bull would come calling instead and replace Scott Speed for those seven races. They are on the verge of getting in the top 35 and have much better equipment than the 71 car, although that team leases its stuff from RCR, so maybe that'll lead to something.
First off, why/where Gibbs would want Labonte back. Well, Gibbs is looking at wanting to start a fourth car next season, now i havent heard much about it lately and that may not happen, but Gibbs does not have two things in his team, owner points for that fourth team to lock them in and a past champion who he could transfer points and fall on a past champ provisional which would lock the car in. Several of the big teams have past champs in their team, such as Roush with Kenseth, Hendrick with Johnson and Gordon, SHR with Stewart, and Penske with Kurt Busch. If Gibbs was to start that fourth team, he could hire Labonte back to run that car and help it get off the ground and guarantee it into the field with his past champ provisionals until the new points restart after Bristol which is after the first five races. Now i dont know if that'd happen as i heard of talk of maybe David Gilliland going into that ride, but if you want to sell or land a sponsor, you have to offer that company a guarantee that the car would be in the show and Bobby could do that.
As a Dale Jr fan, i hate Teresa and Ganassi is a prick, but if you look at how Montoya is running right now and Truex has had some good runs in the 1 car, but just had some lousy finishes. I really believe that they are going to land McMurray to replace Truex, but if enough sponsorship is found, i could see them hire Bobby as well to expand to three cars, give McMurray the owner points of the Bass Pro and again Bobby relies on his past champ provisional. I still believe that RCR will land Bobby but as of right now, i have no idea where Bobby will go. And i did mean Richard Petty Motorsports with RPM, i just find it easier as fast as i type to abbreviate such as HMS, RFR, RCR, RYR, RPR, JGR, EGR, SHR and RPM.

A former NASCAR champion cant keep his ride, but dale jr keeps riding around winning once every 75 or so races? Put bobby in the 88! He will show everyone that he can drive a good car, unlike someone riding around on daddys name and selling t-shirts.

madason- you dumb as hell. how long did it take gordon to win after everham left? alot longer than 70 something races. this sh*t is gonna take time to gell for jr and if it takes 30 years so be it. the point is , a true fan is a true fan. you want jr fans to disappear because he hasnt been winning? get real

actually, it did not even take 45 for gordon to win after evernham left because gordon never had a season without a win other than his rookie year and last year. there are 36 races in a season, do the math. on the note of bobby, he has lost his edge, but could still win if he had the equpiment. Bobby won't though, nobody wants a dying star to drive for them unless they want that champion's provisional to roll in another consistant car. Bobby is definitely a better driver than Earnhardt, there is no denying it. I am an Earnhardt fan but Labonte proves his worth when he gets the car,Earnhardt is at Hendrick! Nobody can even try to tell me the Earnhardt doesn't have the equipment, he has some of the best. A final note, Bobby can still win and so can Earnhardt. They just need some time, Earnhardt had that, Bobby lost it a long time ago.
