The struggles for Richard Childress Racing don't appear to be going away, and they -- as well as potential sponsorship issues -- might be causing the team's longest-tenured driver to be heading for the exits.Sports Illustrated reported on its Web site Tuesday that Kevin Harvick has asked to be released from his current contract with RCR effective at the end of the season, despite the agreement lasting until the end of 2010.
And just to make it a little more juicy, Harvick has reportedly been in discussions with Tony Stewart and Stewart-Haas Racing to race a third car for the team in 2010.
For starters, Harvick's sponsorship from Shell-Pennzoil for his RCR Sprint Cup ride is up for negotiation at the moment thanks to it ending after the current season. RCR, SHR and even Hendrick Motorsports have been rumored to be linked to those discussions, and with the latter two's winning ways of 2009 one would think the tides might turned in their direction.
Next up in consideration is the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series organization that both Harvick and his wife Delana run. Just last month, the company, Kevin Harvick Inc., announced that General Motors would be dropping its support of the program in 2010 -- in addition to numerous other teams -- and that has had to have a big impact on the company.
If indeed Harvick does move to SHR in 2010, a possibility would open up for KHI to merge with the JR Motorsports Nationwide program run by co-owners Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Rick Hendrick. SHR is very tightly knit with Hendrick Motorsports because it receives Hendrick engines and chassis for its race teams.
For Harvick, though, 2009 has been a test in patience.
Harvick was the fourth-place finisher in last fall's Chase for the Sprint Cup despite not winning a single race all season. Instead, he took notes from the book of his oh-so-consistent teammate Jeff Burton and finished on the lead lap 30 of 36 times in addition to scoring 19 Top-10s and 7 Top-5s.
The current season has seen him finish in the Top 5 just twice -- a second-place at Daytona in February and a fourth in Atlanta -- en route to what is currently a 25th-place rank in the season point standings. He hasn't won since his thrilling Daytona 500 victory over Mark Martin to start the 2007 campaign.

It may be Harvick in a Stewart Haas car but it will probably not be the 29 car.
Good luck Kevin. I cannot help but to wonder though, will Hendrick continue to provide engines and chasis to SHR next year? It is one thing to help a struggling team but it is quite another to help them when they are beating your own drivers.

Stewart/Haas Racing will continue recieving support in 2010 and well beyond. Basically S/H Racing is another Hendricks operation anyway, just without it being under the 4 car Hendricks umbrella. Why else would a winning Hendricks crewchief go over to a new operation if he still wasn't technically a H.M.S. employee? Plus Gene Haas is one of Rick Hendricks best friends. Since the Haas team first came into NASCAR, H.M.S. has supplied the engines, and technical advice to the team. Essentially just making it a research and development team, but not now. Kevin Harvick would be a welcome addition to S/H racing, and all signs point to him going. Ryan, and Tony both have been running Delana's Nationwide car some, but I think the engines came from RCR/EGR shop. Now if Harvick does go to S/H, Ricks wife wouldn't have to be co owner with Dale Jr. on Brad Keselowski's Cup car next year. It will be Delana Harvick.

Yes, thank you for that. My point was that it is one thing to help a team until it is fully up to speed. It is another once that team no longer needs your help. It would be like supporting your children when they grow up and start making more money than you. Now that SHR is leading the points, and able to grow, how much longer is Rick really going give them? Maybe I am just missing it.

I am happy to see that Geoffrey has been deleting some of the posts, Anna. These people that come on to put up their ads and the ones that just come on here to insult all Nascar fans should be banned from the site.
There is nothing wrong with people having differing views, it helps stimulate the conversation so long as we do not vehemently go after one another. But when the weather gets warmer the idiots crawl out of their caves and find the fanhouse.
Where is Brad when we need him?

I can see DANICA PATRICK going to SHR. She would bring a lot of money in sponsership. I don't think she will be very good in NASCAR but looking at the money side she will be great for someone. The kid that drives the Jr Nations car is going to be a good catch for someone too.

Notice how Tony Eury Jr had the new kid Kesalowski in the top 10 ALL evening the last race, while the Late Dale Earnharts kid was his usual 20th or so even with the best equipment and people Hendrick motorsports can throw at the 88.The only thing keeping him in racing now is the money his name brings in to the organization with all those goondaler nation fans who are clueless about actual racing. Well its not Eurys fault so who goes next? Rick or maybe he wants to cry a river till he gets in Jimmys or Jeffs car.

Actually Billy I did notice. I am just not sure we were watching the same race. I have been watching what Jr has done since the crew chief change VERY closely so I can make an intelligent comment on the issue. For the most part, I am still observing but here is what I have seen so far.
I am one of those people that thinks Jr is a great guy, just not a GREAT driver. I have often laughed at all the excuses SOME fans make for him, the latest blaming the crew chief I have thought was the most ridiculous, as well as laughing at the ones that say he sucks. That being said, Jr started the race in 13th and spent almost the entire race within 5 positions of that place. He was almost never in 20th or worse. He finished in 15th. Saying he was in "20th or so" is not a true representation of the race.
If you want to give an arguement it was not the crew chief for his failures here is one that holds water. Look at the Nascar Statistics page. It lists the top 25 points earners for the past 6 races. That means starting at ZERO 6 races ago and adding the points only for the past 6 races. Jr is 22nd in that category. He was 19th for the year when they made the change. There has been virtually no change in what that team was doing earlier in finishing positions.
My opinion, for what it is worth, is that the whole team is simply having a slump. I feel much of it has to do with Jr's psyche. This very issue was confirmed by the latest interview with Tony Eury Jr on the issue of his departure.
He is certainly a better driver than his current 21st points position puts him in. maybe he needs to talk to whomever helped Tony Stewart with his anger problem. But since the media is not currently hounding him asking, "when are you going to win a race?" the problem may resolve itself.
