There's a lot of folks in the NASCAR world that said Tony Stewart was straight crazy to leave his championship-winning team of Joe Gibbs Racing for the 2009 season.Me? I didn't exactly make a prediction to stay on the safe side, mainly because I know how Stewart always produces when the odds are against him.
But for all of those that said Stewart and hired teammate Ryan Newman wouldn't find success, the still-young Stewart-Haas Racing is proving the doubters to be completely wrong.
Such a fact, of course, isn't just based on the team's marvelous performance Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway, but on the results that SHR has turned in through the season's first ten races.
That isn't to say, though, that the SHR success in the Russ Friedman 400 should be overlooked.
Team patriarch Stewart led the SHR onslaught by taking a distant second-place behind an untouchable Kyle Busch, with Newman allowing just Jeff Burton between him and Stewart to take fourth spot. Stewart's No. 14 didn't ever nose up front to lead a lap, but some crafty pit work put Newman in front of the 43-car field for some 45 laps of the 400 lap event.
After the race, though, Stewart was pleased with his finish, but felt like circumstances late in the race contributed to his runner-up spot.
"I think we backed into this one today," said Stewart. "We got lucky and got a chance to get tires there with about 50 to go and then got that green flag run at the end, which we typically don't get. So that helped us. We had a lot less laps on the tires than those guys."
Luck or not, it was still a good run and showed a team is developing past just having fast race cars.
Newman, on the other hand, thought he might have seen one slip away.
"We had a winning race car and I think the guy typically out in front had a winning car but the bottom line was we didn't get out in front when we needed to. We had the leader strategy when we got caught up in that restart behind the No. 5 car," said Newman. "I told the guys if we keep doing this we'll get what we want and obviously we want to be in victory lane."
Newman has now scored two straight top-fives -- a first for the South Bend, Ind., driver since the end of the 2007 season at Penske Racing.
"I can't wait to get to the shop Monday and see the smiles on their faces. They have been working hard," said Stewart. "It is just coming together, one piece at a time."
Indeed the season is coming together for SHR -- something that's quite an improvement over the lows the team had hit just before the season-opening Daytona 500 when both primary cars were wiped out in a crash during final practice.
What's worse for the rest of NASCAR? Tony Stewart's forte in this business has nearly always been the mid-season stretch of races at slick race tracks in the heat.
In fact, 15 of Stewart's 33 career wins have come at the next ten tracks on the Sprint Cup schedule, with just one -- the site next weekend's 500-mile jaunt around the famed Darlington Raceway -- being a track where Stewart is yet to visit victory lane.
At the clip this team is advancing, it wouldn't be a surprise for Stewart to erase that zero from his résumé.

I too am amazed at the success of the first year team that is Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. It looked like Newman was going to win during part of the race and then Stewart sure looked like he might pull off an upset there at the end. I believe that is two second place finishes within the past three races? Yes, it won't be long before Stewart is in the winner's circle this season.
I am very impressed by his team and the professionalism they have displayed this season. Tony clearly knew what he was doing when he decided to become an owner/driver and it looks like it's going to pay off. Congratulations to him. He is still one of the best drivers on the track these days & is proving that he remains a force to be reckoned with.

Tony seems to have put a bad chapter in his life behind him. He rarely explodes anymore and seems quite happy and pleasent in all his interviews. Of course, nothing bad has happened to him on the track in that past year or so but his new attitude should be attracting new fans. He has always been a winner and now he projects the image a winner should project.
While I would like to see Jeff win it once again this year it would not bother me to see TS hoist the trophy this year.

I think luck rather than skill has put SHR in the position it now occupies. Even Stewart admits it. Every team goes through a spell of bad luck every season, it's plain that SHR has'nt suffered their run of it yet. Newman has a history of not being able to close the deal, and Stewart seems to fall apart when things are'nt going his way. It's a long season and a little too early to pass out the trophy. Works for me....

SO FAR THIS YEAR THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT WASN'T GETTING it togheter at SHR was the RYAN OLDMAN TEAM.
Just 2 weeks ago we were talking about how stunning
STEWART had been performing this year but we were a little disapppointed about the NEWMANN team not so good finishes. REMEMBER THAT BRAD??.Some divine bean must heard us or our words have carryed weight
and success to the OLDMAN cause ever since he has gotten 2 top 5's and lead laps galore.
And yes, even i sad it 2 weeks ago it's little to early to get ahead of ourselves for another STEWART TROPHY this year, but i wouldn't cmplete scratch it off MIKE, cause stewart has surprised all of us big already so far.
And YES soon or later like it hits every team the bad luck may hit STEWART TEAM too once again and this time not at GIBBS.So be prepared to see TONY
BLOWIN HELL AND FUMING once again at somebody because it's in his blood EMERSON.But i would say
blowing a part not falling a part, cause i never saw STEWART FALLING APART IN THE 11 NAZCAR YEARS THAT I followed him and the INDY years before that.
My take is it's next spawsm show will be at INDYANAPOLIS when those tires strart to blow every 20 laps on all cars, cause the BADYEAR TIRE FIASCO
STILL THERE and unchallenged by other tires manufacturer.I ALSO PREDICT tony first 2009 victory
in STEWART HOMELAND OF INDY. lets wait and see.
works for me....

Don,
As usual, I disagree with your post. Tony Stewart wouldn't be the success he is today and have the savvy business sense he has if he weren't a tremendous talent. Luck plays a part in racing sure, but luck is certainly not what's put Tony in this position this year. He is talented, smart and savvy. He knows what he is doing and those of us who doubted him are being proven wrong. I for one congratulate him. I am impressed.

Give credit where it is due. The people assembled behind the scenes are where credit is due. Tony got alot of the best people in the garage and to his credit it's all come together quickly. They can both drive but there's 45+ guys that can drive but many don't have the resources to run top 10 consistantly.

Tony Stewart can drive anything to victory lane. He usually always finishes in the top ten no matter how far back he starts. A few years ago he took an outdated car to the Chili Bowl, ran his own unique line, and blew the competition away. I have been a fan since he was running sprints in places like Eagle NE and winning. Indy and now NASCAR, he is the most versatile and talented driver out there. Earnhardt was 50 when he died. Stewart is only 30 something? A lot of time and he allready has two under his belt. I am sure he will have more.

Ill admit they are running well beyond my expectations, but i dont believe they'll win a race. If they havent won yet, i dont think they will and i dont think they'll be a threat for the championship. Ive been saying it and ill continue to say it, as long as they are relying on another organization, they arent going to perform to the top team levels. Hendrick is not going to give stuff to knock his out of a championship. When Stewart Haas has their own engine and chassis program, then they'll be winning more races and be a threat for championships.
