Gordon went from worst a year ago at Texas Motor Speedway to first on Sunday to win the Samsung 500 and cement the No. 24 as a legitimate championship contender.
"How ironic is this that we go on this streak and end it at Texas?" asked Gordon in victory lane following the win in which he led a race-high 105 laps.
Ironic, indeed.
Before Sunday, Jeff Gordon had two tracks on the Cup Series schedule he had never won at including TMS and south Florida's Homestead-Miami Speedway. And a year ago, Gordon endured one of his worst-career races at the Fort Worth track with a 43rd-place finish after crashing a car that wasn't even in the same performance zip code as the rest of the field.
Gordon's Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson completed a HMS 1-2 sweep for the ninth time in their careers with Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle coming home third. Tony Stewart finished fourth and Matt Kenseth fifth.
Teammate Johnson didn't make things easy for Gordon in the closing laps, despite taking a win of his own just a week ago at Martinsville Speedway. When the green flag fell on what ended up being the 500-miler's final restart, Johnson looked ready to pounce after Gordon shot out to a lead of nearly 1.5 seconds.
Johnson, though, started to close until the lead stabilized as the laps wound down. Then, Gordon caught some lapped traffic that allowed Johnson to close within a half-second of the leader. The lap counter, though, was in Gordon's favor as he managed to keep a winning distance until the checkered flag fell on an afternoon that might serve as a warning shot to the rest of the field that 2009 will mark a serious effort to get the No. 24 back in championship form.
Now, heading to the season's second off-weekend thanks to the Easter holiday, Gordon holds a lead of 162 points in the point standings over Johnson with Kurt Busch third, 180 points back. More importantly, Gordon would now start the Chase for the Sprint Cup just ten points behind Kyle Busch [two wins in 2009] and tied with the rest of the season's one-race winners.
The race marked a nice turnaround for the Roush Fenway group after tumultuous run in the past two weeks at Bristol and Martinsville with two cars in the Top-5. It could, though, have been better, until a pit road blunder for Carl Edwards on the final pit stop sent the No. 99 from the race lead to deep in the lead-lap pack. He managed just a 10th-place finish to continue an otherwise mediocre season.
Kyle Busch was a non-factor all day (except when he nearly took out then-leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. on an ill-advised four-wide move on a restart) after cutting tire early under green flag conditions. The cut seemed to have occured after Busch got irritated with John Andretti and sideswiped the No. 34.
Busch finished 18th after finally earning his way back to the lead lap late in the race.

It's about freaking time!!!! Congratulations to Gordon and my man, Jimmie! Jeff & Jimmie both drove perfectly and deserve to be sitting one two in the points standings!
It's just not NASCAR to not have a winning Jeff Gordon! In what was otherwise a fairly boring race, Jeff's win made up for the non-excitement. I am truly happy for him, his family and his team! I think I will stop calling for Steve Letarte's head now, LOL!

My man, Jack Rousch, should kick some butts and replace some people over the next 2 weeks. All 5 of his cars were competitive (well, maybe not McMurray), but their pit performance simply stank up the joint. Bifle (and maybe Edwards) hould have been up there vying for the win with Gordon and Johnson. Anyhow, congrats to Jeffy G.--he drove a good race and maybe has finally got the monkey off his back.

Jeff Gordon didn't win, Johnson gave him a gift.It was obvious that Jimmie could have passed Gordon after catching him at the end, but backed off and let Gordon take the checkers. Don't hand Jeffy the season trophy just yet. works for me....

Give me a break...you don't win championships by "letting your teammate win"!! They may be teammates but they both want to come out on top...even a moron could tell you that. Stop being a hater and accept it.

Finally a win. I was going into withdrawal. Clearly the best driver so far this year, I just hope he keeps it up. Seven races does not a season or championship make. While he is 240 points ahead of Busch and 290 ahead of Matt Kenseth, in chase standings he is behind them both right now. Get some wins Jeff.

Congratuluations to Rick Hendrick for putting together a solid team.
Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are a good combination.
Friends off the track, no ego clashing.
Johnson is supposed to chase Gordon, and try to win. If not they still secure a 1-2 finish.
Mr. Hendrick had three cars in the top ten.
Last week, he had all four. I like that.
Mark Martin and Dale Jr. often drafted when they were driving for opposite owners.
Mark and Dale Sr. were old friends.
That respect carries over to the #5 and #88.

Don't get me wrong, I have never disagreed with you that Jeff will win that fifth championship before he retires, I believe he will. I think where we disagreed was in my blaming of the faults of the 24 team being Steve Letarte's fault? I now understand that Jeff wasn't 100% into racing last year and has made changes this year and is back to giving 110%. I am truly happy for him. IMO, there isn't a classier guy on the track then Jeff Gordon and that's saying a lot as I am a huge Johnson fan! :-)
Let's just hope that what happened to Jeff two seasons ago, won't happen again. Leading the points and leading in the win column through the regular season only to be surpassed by his teammate and friend Johnson during the chase. It's a long season so hopefully Jeff's momentum will keep on throughout the entire season.
And Don, I must disagree with you. I watched the race and although Jimmie made one hell of a comeback (as always thanks to Knaus and his ability to fix the problems with the car while on the track), Jimmie needed at least ten more laps to be able to successfully pass Jeff for the win. I don't believe Jeff nor Jimmie ever back off the win for the other. It was a clean one-two finish. Congratulations to them both!

I guess the 48 car also LET the 24 car finish in the top ten in 6 out of the 7 races we have had this year. Which by the way, is more than ANY other driver has done. While he was at it, the 48 also let the 24 car finish in the top five in 5 out of the 7 races we have had this year. Also more than ANY other driver has done. Or, maybe it was Brian France LETTING Jeff Gordon do all that. In fact, maybe it was Brian France that has LET Jeff Gordon win 82 Nascar Sprint Cup races. Which, by the way, is more than ANY other driver out there yesterday. In fact, more than any other 2 drivers combined out there yesterday.
Yup, keep LETTING Jeff do it. LOL.

Anyone who watched this race could see that JJ was giving it everything he had at the end as evidenced by how loose he was getting out of several turns.......sorry for those who don't believe it but JG won this race hands down.
