Matt Kenseth, fresh off his win in the rain a week ago in the season-opening Daytona 500, made it two in a row Sunday night by winning the Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
And yes, this time it did go the full distance.
It didn't come easy for Kenseth as Jeff Gordon, winless since October 2007, tried to get close enough to make a move around the No. 17 several times in the final 34 laps. Gordon closed to within a half-second and less than a handful of car lengths more than once in the final run, but could never get alongside the No. 17 as he had done in the previous green flag run.
After the race, Gordon said an adjustment on the final pit stop might have been the difference in his and Kenseth's view of the checkered flag.
"We made an adjustment that made my car just a little too tight at the end," said Gordon during a television interview on pit road following the race.
Regardless, Gordon acknowledged his team has taken significant strides over its performance level from just one year ago. Sunday night, he led 64 of the race's 250 laps on the style of track his team struggled with in 2008.
Kenseth was able to seal the deal and become just the fourth driver in NASCAR Sprint Cup history to win a season's first two events, thanks both to his flawless final drive and work on pit road that was consistently the fastest all night. The No. 17 team managed to get Kenseth's Ford back on track during the final pit stop just ahead of Gordon after coming in for a four-tire change on the bumper of the No. 24.
The rest of the top five included Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch, though Biffle was the only one who showed he a had a legitimate shot to win the race. On the race's final pit stop that all but secured the race win for his teammate Kenseth, Biffle slid through his pit box and over the air hose, costing the team several seconds on pit lane and dropping him to deep in the top 10 for the final restart.
After the race, Biffle was beside himself for the mistake and wondered aloud why his team shouldn't just fire him on the spot for the costly mistake.
Perhaps Biffle still has his job because the race win kept his team a perfect five wins and zero losses during the race's February date on the Cup schedule. Biffle started that streak in 2005.
During the middle parts of the race -- one that was exceptionally clean with just one caution for Kevin Harvick losing an engine and smacking the Turn 1 wall, and four other cautions for brief rain showers -- a sense of worry spread over the Hendrick Motorsports camp. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin both developed similar engine trouble that resulted in 39th and 40th for the Chevrolet drivers, respectively.
Teammates Gordon and Jimmie Johnson (finished 9th), as well as the Hendrick engine-supplied Stewart-Haas Racing, never had problems develop on their end. Tony Stewart wound up 8th and Ryan Newman 28th.
Pole sitter Brian Vickers was never a factor all night after being forced to start last on the field thanks to an engine change. He finished 10th.

Until the last 25 laps i really tought that JG / KB were going to catch up with kenseth, exspecially GODON and i was thinking about you mike being a happy guy after a deluding last year. Nevertheless godon had a terrific finish and so the KYLIE. Too bad for BIFFLE messing up on pit row,he could have won or a top 2,but his finish it's also nothing to brush away either.
More delusion for dej and a not so happy JJ,I now wonder if the engine problems at DEI& RCR last couple of years have now begun at HMS too.
Poor luck for STEWART if such problems persist, but it's obviously too early to tell.
My cristal bowl sees a comeback in high gear for JGORDON and KYLE BUSH,another mediocre year for STEW. AND DEJ another summer comeback for JJ but i do not know about another champ. although it's very possible.GOD ON and KB are going to try harder than ever before JJ matches JG.
We'll see. Works for me.... A.S.

Way to go Matt, glad your listening to your crew chief and not staying out just to lead a lap. Your pit crew was fantastic, and I hope Jack appreciates the job your doing.

BORING!! As a NASCAR fan for 40 years (from South Carolina) They have finally done it for me. Take 2nd Darlington race off the schedule, take off North Wilksboro, Take off NC Motor Speedway and add another race at boring tracks in California, Las Vegas and Chicago, all for the almighty dollar. Again start the race at 6:15 so for the first 45 minutes we get to see 35 Minutes of commercials and 10 minutes of track drying. If anyone could kill NASCAR it's Brian France. Just like Junior, if not for his Grandpa and Dad he would be flipping burgers at Burger King. Bye Nascar. You have no one to blame but yourself.

I guess it sucked if your driver was not out in front all night but for the Jeff Gordon fans I am sure it was much better than anything we got to see last year. While Jeff is quick to compliment his crew and how hard they have worked and how far they have come, once again it was a race in which every single time he went into the pits he came out further behind and had to make it all up on the track. When that changes, he will once again start winning races and add to his championships.

I'm with you, Jim--God, that track is boring! Watching New Year's Day parades is more exciting, and I stopped doing that years ago! Hat's off to Kenseth--he definitely earned this one, unlike last week when it went to whoever happened to guess when the end of the race would be (talk about the "lucky dog"). Agreed also on Gordon's crew, as he lost the lead every time in the pits instead of on the track--not a bunch, but just enough so that he had to make tough passes to get back what was lost. He certainly seems to be on his game driving-wise this year. As for the race, this week's "flavor" was definitely "vanilla"! Dull, dull, dull. Might as well lay out an oval on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Anna, I hope your crystal ball is right. So far I would have to say in just two races Jeff has shown he still has the fire and desire to win. I am sure he is eager to proove to his detractors that he is not washed up and riding around on past performance.

Jim makes a good point! Start times are getting later and later. And some of the old tracks take a back seat. To NASCAR: Remember your base! Remember your loyal fans! Bring in more, but don't scew the sport up anymore than now! If others want to watch, then enjoy our show! If not, watch the NHL or NBA.
Way to go #17!

BY THE WAY KENSETH/HAYWARDS/THE BEEFFLE.
3 GOOD DRIVERS which for a while i believe they would be much far ahead, had they left the brown hat man teams years ago and raced in a chevr. top team.Nevertheless, a terrific season beginning is what KEM SETH has been performing.

The Oscars or Nascar...not even close. The race was not the best race ever but it was better than the past races at Fontana. I think Jeff has the fire back. I heard he said that if they continued to run the way they are then it's a matter of just HOW MANY races they win this year.
