The NASCAR world may have just found out why Joe Gibbs Racing has been so dominant in the 2008 Nationwide Series. The No. 18 and No. 20 JGR Nationwide Series teams -- driven by Joey Logano and Tony Stewart -- were accused Saturday night at Michigan International Speedway of tampering with the post-race inspection process after NASCAR found magnets attached to the back of the accelerator pedals on both cars during a chassis dyno test.
During the test, NASCAR officials discovered magnets on the accelerator pedals of the two Gibbs Toyotas. Several sources said the magnets could, in theory, keep the pedals from being fully depressed, which would limit the engines' output and distort the data available to officials. The test measures the horsepower, torque, and other numbers of an engine as it sits inside the race car and by putting a magnet behind the pedal, the numbers NASCAR would get from the test would be incorrect, leading to incorrect conclusions about the parity of the competition.
"This was an attempt to interfere with NASCAR's post-race inspection process, and we are taking it very seriously," said Jim Hunter, vice president of corporate communications for the sanctioning body.
NASCAR has done one other chassis dyno test this year in the Nationwide Series at Atlanta in March and the point of the tests are to get an accurate reading of what a varied selection of race cars have under the hood in terms of performance.
In theory, Joe Gibbs Racing and the Toyota camp as a whole could have greatly benefited from the chassis dyno test with the magnet in place because NASCAR might have changed a rule in favor of better competition by seeing numbers were unfair to the JGR Toyotas.
I would imagine there aren't going to be many concessions to Toyota from here on out in 2008 thanks to this slap-in-the-face that the JGR team dropped on NASCAR.
The magnets were most likely installed on the race cars following the completion of Saturday's Nationwide Series event at Michigan because they would be a significant performance reducer on-track. They could have been easily installed while the cars were being pushed to NASCAR inspection via a crew member reaching in and sticking it to the back of pedal.
In the Nationwide Series -- where the penalties took place -- JGR has 13 wins in 2008. The team has also been dominant in NASCAR's top Sprint Cup Series with 9 wins in 2008.
I think the worst part about the whole thing is that JGR has now managed to put a big question mark next to all of their Nationwide Series -- and in many fans eyes, the ones in the Sprint Cup Series -- wins in 2008 because of this move. There is simply no way for a team to explain their way out of this because magnets don't just magically show up on two race cars, and it opens the door to wondering what other illegal advantages the team is trying across the board.
The penalties will undoubtedly be quite substantial with crew chief suspensions, point deductions, and a tremendous amount of money. The fallout could even go deeper for JGR because its not often someone tries to interfere with NASCAR's post-race inspection -- much less a competition test.
Expect penalty results on Monday or Tuesday in the coming week.
So, in the end, was it all worth it for JGR to win a few more second-tier series events?
I say no.

FIRST...Congratulations to Carl Edwards and a fine win at MIS!!!
Second...hey, Geoff, CARL EDWARDS WON!! Don't be so biased that there is no story about his dominate victory Saturday!!!
Third...To everyone that came to the defense of Kyle Busch, and JGR about the extra horsepower...EAT CROW.
I've been harping on this for the last 2+ months. A person would literally have to be living in a cocoon to NOT see what has been going on with this team.
JGR should be penalized to the MAX. All wins must be taken away and severe point and fine penalties handed out to all their teams in the NNS. The suspensions should be for the rest of the season, if not forever!!! Furthermore, the JGR cup cars most be scrutinized with a fine tooth comb until they can follow the rules of NASCAR to a "T".
Fourth...JGR = Cheaters. No wonder Tony wants out of there. Or, maybe, Tony has some great ideas for his new team. Tony is a "hands on" person when it comes to working on his race cars.
Fifth...There are several people out there that owe me an apology.

Hey TOSOR,
I'm glad your enjoying yourself at the expense of JGR but before you go tooting your horn too loudly remember they are talking about the Nationwide series here not the cup series. Take Kyle Busch's wins away from him in the nationwide series if it eases your pain and your still looking at 10 wins if you count the truck series.
No matter what you hate about Toyotas your going to have to get used to Kyle Busch whipping butt every year no matter what you put him in, take some friendly advise and find some other driver to throw stones at it will eventually ease your pain.
KYLE BUSCH ROCKS NASCAR!

Hey Bernie...
This Cheating impacts ALL of JGR!!
All the cars owned by JGR should be checked and rechecked for any cheating.
To say that it ONLY involves the NNS is no different than saying they did NOT have a HP advantage.
Wake up and smell the coffee...JGR is a big cheater and it is not limited to only the Nationwide Series.
Someday you koolaid drinking fans will come to realize this.
BUSTED!!!

Kyle better enjoy it, because it isnt goin to last very long. When it comes to the chase, other teams are going to catch up as it does every year. Last year Jeff Gordon dominated the regular season, but it was Johnson that took the championship. Same goes for 2004. Kurt Busch was pretty much a nobody and Hendrick dominated the regular season, but neither Johnson or Gordon held up the championship trophy that year. Bottom line is Kyle Busch can dominate all he wants right now, but when the chase comes, Dale Jr, Jimmie Johnson, or Carl Edwards is going to knock him down alot of pegs! Get ready to see the pouty whiney Kyle Busch that goes and crawls under a rock when he doesnt win!

That's all a great approach on your part CJ, positivity is always a good thing but Kyle Busch so far has 80 bonus points to start the chase and the way he's been going I think he's going to be hard to beat. Granted Carl Edwards deserves the win and also has 50 bonus points but Kyle did finish 2nd and could have ran a better finish if his front end could have been tightened up a bit. It's going to be interesting to watch how it all unfolds but I don't think Kyle Busch is going to fold under pressure like most of his critics think. Nice try though... LOL ;)

Apologize for what tosor? Have you forgotten what you were claimimg? Your argument as I recall was that Nascar was giving more HP to toyotas purposely. They weren't, so what are you bragging about. Everyone was agreeing that Toyota's had a HP advantage (although some disagreements on how much).

Ouch, that's gotta hurt if you are a JGR fan. Yes, there is a chance it is just the Nationwide series side of the company cheating but once you get caught this bad, it is almost impossible to get anyone to believe that.

NO...NO...NO!!
My assertions were that that the Toyota's (especially JGR, but other teams as well) had an obvious and unfair advantage in horsepower. At one point, I pointed out that Toyota's had won half of all the Cup and NNS races. I also said that NASCAR was ALLOWING this to continue, unabated. Until recently, when NASCAR changed the bore "SPACING", that turned out to be 100% true and factual.
And, NO, everybody was NOT agreeing that Toyota had more HP. I had been saying so for several weeks prior to the release of NASCAR's test results. Then everyone jumped on the "more HP" bandwagon.
Now that NASCAR has figured out that it is losing it's fan base because of the dominance by the Toyota's, they tried to reign them in. Apparently, somebody at JGR didn't want NASCAR to know that they STILL had the HP advantage or how much.
Bottom line...NASCAR intentionally allowed this to happen to increase it's fan base, increase it's revenue, and make a bigger profit. It backfired. More and more fans are discouraged with the races every week. A one team dominance by a foreign car manufacturer is not what NASCAR was built on. (YES...Toyota is a foreign made car. It is only assembled here in the U.S. but all the R & D is in Japan and the profits go to go there also.)
Poor anna...she was one screaming the loudest that this was not true when I first wrote about it. I wonder if she will be eating any crow for dinner tonight?

It's NOT bigotry to say that Japan is manipulating currency to cheat Americans out of jobs. It is the complete truth. Before any of you rush to the defense of Toyota read this link:
http://www.economagic.com/em-cgi/data.exe/bjap/ehdis01
Why would any honest country that is running a trade surplus deliberately devalue their currency?
Because they aren't honest. They are stealing the US blind and some people just can't see it.
Toytota has been caught cheating in almost every racing series they have entered even to the point that they were thrown out of rallying for a year.
This is nothing new for them.
Bigotry? Hardly.

This manufactured part was not on the car during the race, it was most likely put on during the teardown procedures the teams due after each event. It was not installed during the race in order to increase performance on the JGR cars, it would have hurt the performance. Most likely some certain team members took it upon themselves to modify the car before it went to the chassis dyno.
Ford and Chevrolet's power numbers were about the same at 611 and 612, while the Toyota and Dodge were at 632 and 628. Dodge certainly isn't having problems making power on their motors. With Dodges numbers so close to Toyota why aren't they being complained about. Maybe the Ford and Chevy should figure out how to make more power out of their engine packages instead of complaining about how Toyota has more power.

FIRST OFF MR. TOSOF..., i do not remember addressing you
personally in the last couple of weeks. so i do not know what give you the luxury to talk to me again.
Poor Anna your ass, in the previous drive by's of yours you were claiming that only the toyota had the power advantage in HP and nazcar was allowing it to slip thru. Then you expected
nascar to step only on toyotas toes and when the deliberation
by the nazcar regime on the space bore came out all car makes were directed to follow the new bs rule(the new restrictor plate).
In addition the kyle bush and others toyota was not found to be the highest in hp; a.j. almandinger car was the highest at
632hp and the DODGES next at 628 than the flipper driver ford at 612 and 4th the #20 toyota. SO YOU WERE 100% WRONG, OK 99%. WHOOPEY DOO?.
You are now saying above that everybody was joining the bandwagon about the high HP and by your own words above
you were the first to join the media bandwagon few weeks before everybody else.(recheck your statement above).
Than yet you contraddict yourself again by saying poor anna she was screaming the loudest about this high hp not true.
SO,WHERE IS YOUR OTHER SIDE OF REALITY?
Answer:on these pages again.
Here is more unreality:
Above, blog 13, now that your new drive by cruise is more than half way through, your cap gun begins a new spew by saying nascar has figured out that their advantage allowance to toyota has not been working for them because of the TOYOTA dominance and that's why nazcar has been loosing attendance. BULL SHIET!.
NAZCAR has been loosing spectators because the damn economy has been downtrending, the gas prices are still the highest ever; the supermarket prices have inflated 25% to 50% for some products called necessityes. The electricity and
propane gas prices have increased 50 to 75% in the last couple of years. AIRWAYS FARES to the tracks and anywhere else have increased and so has everything else. The average
middle class citizen composing more than 75% of nazcar tracks attendance has too save a BUCK somewhere and they are saving on entertainment and leasures and that includes NAZCAR.
NASCAR LOOSES FAN ALL THE TIME BUT NEW ONES REPLACES THEM ALL THE TIME. Not lately because those new fans havn't got any money to spend to replace old ones.
THE MAGNETS that nascar found on the gas pedals does not increase the hp power or the performance; it only DECREASES.
THOSE MAGNETS were put there after the race and not before or during the race. go read about. the idea whoever originated the stupid idea was a foul one dfenetely to confuse the dyno reading and i doubt the trick was ever used before
otherwisw the nazcar SS garage inspectors would found those magnets before.
YE YOU finally realize that toyota is an american made car paying millions of$$$ in payroll to the american worker and millions in tax revenue to the local townships of operation ,the state of operation and the federal gov. in washinghton.
SO WHAT IF SOME OF THE PROFITS ARE GOING TO JAPAN? WHO CARES?
And not all of the R/D are in japan but more than 50% is. AGAIN, SO WHAT.
Lets all sign a petition to send the extra profits from now on to the TOSOR POCKET. Will that make you happy?
OH and to conclude poor anna is not eating a crow tonight or tomorrow because this new story has just begun(the magnets)
actually i'm eating CAVIAR and FILET MIGNON everyday and i will continue to do so even if the REGIME comes down hard on JGR. On top of i'm digesting those rich dinners with JAMAICAN BLUE MOUNTAIN AND HAWAYAN KONA ORIGINAL COFFEES
without cheap coffee beans mixed in. works for me.

DEAR MR ADS I'M VERY INTERESTED IN LEARNING HOW IS THAT THE DEVALUATION of the JAPS YEN IS F...... UP THE
american worker and the american economy.
If the JAPS devaluate their yen, that means more power to the american $$$ in exchange for the YEN. N OT LESS. To be even more clear it means if i go exchange a $ for the yen, i get more yen because their yen has been devaluate and worth less. So please teach me how does this reverse process of yours works. CHINA HAS DEVALUATED their cuurrency in 2005
and INDIA has also done it few years before. HOW DID that screw up the american worker and economics. I do not remember those 2 countryes screwing us up. The trade deficit
yes it's there; has been there . You got that right.

Toyota is making better engines and with their great RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT program they are building better motors and cars. American small three were ripping off Americans for many years and now they got screwed because they were building JUNK. I love Japanese cars and would NOT drive an America car if it was given to me( too many problems) Dale Sr. got a Japanese race car driver to drive one of his cars a couple of years before he was killed.

When are they going to change the name of NASCAR to NAFCAR? The S in NASCAR is for stock, and the only thing stock about the cars is the logo. They'll get their fan base back when they start letting Chevys be Chevys, Fords be Fords, Dodges be Dodges and Toyotas be Toyotas. If Toyota has a better product, so be it.
