Watkins Glen Could Boost Gordon, Stewart

The calendar now says August, and unbelievably, former Sprint Cup champions Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart still haven't found victory lane in 2008.

It wouldn't be correct, though, to say that each driver has struggled in 2008. In fact, it's been quite the opposite.

Through 21 races, Gordon has secured two poles, eight Top-5s, and to Top-10s. His best finish was a second-place run at Martinsville in the spring, and the results have landed him solidly inside the Top 12 drivers who will qualify for the the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

He's currently 6th in points, 381 points out of the lead.

Three DNF's in 2008 have hurt Gordon's season stats so far and without that share of bad luck, he'd be in much better shape as the series heads to a track that Gordon undoubtedly has to call one his favorites -- the road course at Watkins Glen.

A suspension failure in the Daytona 500, a hard crash at Las Vegas, and a spin in the closing laps of the July Daytona race took Gordon from sure-bet Top-5 finishes.

Stewart has been even closer to securing victories in 2008 if not for horrifically bad luck. The moment that stands out the most in Stewart's season was the flat tire he suffered while leading the closing laps of the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte this past May.

At Indianapolis, pit strategy dropped the No. 20 from a Top-10 run all the back to a 23rd-place finish.

Overall, Stewart has recorded seven Top-5s and 10 Top-10s with the same number of DNF's as Gordon -- three. As a result, Stewart now sits 490 points back of teammate and point leader Kyle Busch to take 9th-place in the standings.

Sunday's race at Watkins Glen will undoubtedly be a shot at redemption for both drivers who combined for 9 of the Sprint Cup Series' 36 race wins in 2007. The race will be even moreso for Gordon, who ultimately handed Stewart the race win in last year's edition of the road course race by mistakenly spinning by himself in the first corner of the twisty layout while leading with less than 10 laps to go.

Gordon wound up 9th.

Prior to some changes that NASCAR made the Chase a few years ago, both drivers would be sitting in a great position when the Chase started after Richmond in September, but with Kyle Busch scoring 10 points bonus for each race win that is tacked into the initial Chase standings, neither Gordon nor Stewart want to start the 10 race run more than 70 points in the hole.

In other words, Gordon and Stewart have reached a point now in the season where points racing isn't exactly all that matters.

Instead, its all about winning -- which is something that Gordon and Stewart are pretty darn good at.
