Johnson the New Busch? No. 48 on Pole

Remember this guy?

Jimmie Johnson -- word has it that he has won two Sprint Cup championships -- appears to be the new Kyle Busch in the NASCAR world.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver captured his second-career Allstate 400 at the Brickyard last week at Indianapolis, finished second three weeks ago at Chicagoland, and now he's on the pole for Sunday's Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway.

In other words, he's starting to step up to the level of Busch, who has won seven times in 2008 in addition to two poles.

Johnson turned a lap at Pocono Friday afternoon of 168.215 mph to top his 2009 teammate and outside pole-sitter Mark Martin. Both drivers are getting pretty used to the view at the start of the race they started in the same positions at Indianapolis last weekend.

David Gilliland was the biggest surprise of the Top-5 on Friday after posting the third-best lap of the field with a time of 167.187 mph. Continuing his improved second-half of the season, Jeff Gordon starts fourth and Matt Kenseth starts fifth.

Kasey Kahne won the June event at Pocono and expects to be a favorite this weekend. He'll start seventh.

Chad Chaffin in the No. 34 car was the only driver not to make the field.
