It's a good thing that FOX Sports analyst Darrell Waltrip has the weekend off from NASCAR.After a visit to a Nashville-area doctor who's treated many entertainers with vocal problems, Waltrip was told to minimize any talking for a while. From the Charlotte Observer:
Fox TV analyst Darrell Waltrip, who lost his voice during last week's race at Bristol, has been diagnosed with severely inflamed vocal cords and is under doctor's orders to severely limit his speaking for the time being.Waltrip definitely had no business being in the booth on Sunday. He didn't add a whole lot the broadcast, and I know I cringed several times just listening to his voice. Fellow analyst Jeff Hammond could have easily filled in.
The whole situation does make me wonder if FOX was being mindful of how NBC treated the situation with Benny Parson's when he was battling cancer during his final season. NBC wasn't always completely up-front about Benny's situation and not having him in the booth caused some worry.
Dick Vitale, another quite-vocal commentator, had similar vocal problems for much of the NCAA basketball season before returning after a month or two off. I do hope Waltrip can be back for Martinsville in two weeks.

Even tough i like DARREL WALMARTRIP as a commentator
and as a driver in the past,i also believe, he should not been in the boot at all.
Well, at the least we got one positive thing about his voice problem: we did not have to hear the usual, BOOGETY, BOOGETY, BOOGETY crap. Works for me.

Darryl may have been a great driver, but he and Larry Mac have got to go. Between Larry's atrocious grammar and Darryl's over the top hyping I'd rather stick icepicks in my eardrums than listen to those two any more. NASCAR's cookie cutter cars and lame races are bad enough but Darryl and Larry are like fingernails on a chalkboard. Bring back claasy announcers like Ken Squier and Ned Jarrett....please!

Too bad it wasn't Joe Buck and/or Tim McCarver and the news was to say they would never talk again...

Darrell should not have been in the booth at all on Sun. His voice was too painful to listen to. It's OK, though, as I'm pretty done with watching Nascar on TV, anyway. The top tier of the sport has become a ridiculous sideshow. Nascar is doing everything it can do draw in fans by "dumbing down" the sport to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The demographic it is appealing to are the people that were professional wrestling fans LAST year, soccer fans the year before that, and who knows what next year? Bill France, Sr. must be rolling in his grave to see what the sport he worked so hard for has become. I'll be going back to my local bull ring racetrack this summer, where the sport is still pure and unspoiled, and avoiding TV coverage all together.

THANK GOD Is there any way this doctor's order can be extended for the rest of DW's natural life, so the rest of us don't have to suffer through hearing his stupid hillbilly observations?

I think John Madden should be banned from commentating football games. He talks about absolutely nothing as if he is trying to relive his old football days fifty years ago.

Darrell Waltrip shouldn't have taken the chance of ruining his voice during the race. We need him to help get us through these boring long track races. Perhaps he could vent our cause for two cars: one for short tracks and road courses where aerodynamics are not needed but beating and banging is the key. And, a second car for the long and super tracks that rely on aerodynamics. BOOGETY, BOOGETY, BOOGETY GO GET EM DARRELL>

It must be divine intervention, thank GOD we don't have to listen to that juvenile telling us how hard and dangerous racing is. If you want true pros and knowlegeable announcers listen to Formula 1 broadcast on speedvision, most entertaing and interesting.

He defintely had no business working that race. His voice was terrible to listen to. Hey DW, how about being a professional and stepo aside when you're unable to do the job you're paid to do. There's always another race.

Yeeeesss. But basically it's all Fox. Why do they think they are the show and not the drivers or the race? I got so turned off with NASCAR on Fox when they showed us Hammond lounging in wine country, Darrel landing in a helicopter, Hammond repeling down a building, a segment on drivers golf carts that was all about Fox's cart, etc, etc.
And whats the deal with "free pass" for half the season and "lucky dog" for the other half?
Larry says "pardon my english, but it comes from the heart". Maybe he could spend his off season time in remedial english class.
And the gopher cam, as Mark Martin said, is stupid.
Each year I grit my teeth thru the NASCAR on Fox half of the season and look forward to the second half.

If DW went out now and never spoke again to or for a nascar event, it would be wonderful.
The class announcers of the past are sorely needed!!!

I absolutely agree with others who think that was a most wonderful race experience---WITHOUT-- the lame comentary of DW. He was a RACER Boy's . He is NOT an announcer and never will be. He has a certain stchck like Larry MacRenolds (an even worse announcer) Why do TV networks think "former players" in any sport have any business in "the Booth" ? There have to be better choices for NASCAR announcers than those two guys. Say goodby to DW.....Permanently.....PLeeeezzzzzee....

I like ALL the commentators on Fox. Who cares about grammar when you're watching a race anyway. I look forward to hearing them as much as I do watching the race.

DW should have been sent home. They could have moved Hammond up from the hotel. And let him do the race. And their are plenty or other retired race drivers that could have filled in if they wanted to use them. Please just don't use the jerks from ABC/ESPN I would rather have ice picks pushed threw my ears. They are dumb as a bag of rocks.
