This incident started so innocently with Casey Mears hitting a slick spot on track and sliding up into the loose stuff in turn 2 Sunday at Auto Club Speedway.
Within the first 20 seconds of the video below Mears has flipped, Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s day is ruined, Sam Hornish Jr. is out, and the red flag is waved. Enjoy:
What most impressed me in that crash was around the :50 mark, where the NASCAR safety worker that arrived on scene. When Hornish's engine engulfed in flames, Mears was stuck in an odd position and that worker jumped on to Mears' car with the fire burning behind him to help the driver. Kudos to all of the track safety workers involved.
Much is said about the improvements to cars and protective gear worn by the drivers and pit crews. The track safety teams have taken strides in their safety as well. Helmets, instant communication devices and fire retardant suits (just to name a few) have greatly improved the response time and actions after an accident. These safety necessities along with NASCAR rules (i.e. freezing the field once the yellow flag has been waved) make these Safety Teams the best in the business. Kudos? You bet!
I don't care what the technological advances are. When I saw the official jump up right next to that fire to get Kasey Mears out last Sunday I was like "Good Lord!" That was insane! I don't care how fire retardent those suits are. That guys deserves a raise!! Pure courage. Mega Kudos!
For sometime I have been watching Dale Earnhart Jr and his races and Sundays Race with the new car with the Hendricks Brothers car, showed me that Dale has a chance to really win some races this year.
The car is remarkable. He has a new sponsor, has moved on from the family controversy and control and in my book, I'm cheering for him to really make a mark in 2008 in NASCAR History! If He were to read this, I would say "Dale, Carry On My Wayward Son, the only shoes you need to fill is your own not your Fathers or anyone elses. You made it to second place in the Las Vegas Race. With this car, you will succeed. This is your year to prove to everyone that you got what it takes to put the other drivers in the dust! I'm rooting for you my brother!
Congrats to Jr, although I was disappointed he joined RHR.(I hate Gordon), I am impressed with how well he is doing this year, next stop WIN... Your dad would be proud of him standing on his own two feet, and not in his dad's shoes. good job. Looking forward to each race now, not dreading it...
