With qualifying and all on-track activities canceled at Auto Club Speedway on Friday, Robby Gordon got plenty of face time with the NASCAR media concerning his penalty stemming from Daytona. In review, Gordon switched from Ford to Dodge a week before practice began, built the cars, went to Daytona, failed inspection because of parts that were sent to him from Dodge in error, and was fined $100,000, docked 100 owner and driver points, and his crew chief was suspended for six weeks.
Gordon, naturally is appealing.
One of his sponsors, Jim Beam, is taking a swing at the situation by trying to start a petition for Robby in his effort.
It's good to see that Robby has some support in this issue, because you do feel bad for the guy. It wouldn't be right for Gordon to lose sponsorship or race opportunities because of a part sent to him in error.Representatives from Jim Beam, which sponsors Gordon's No. 7 car, will canvas the Auto Club Speedway grandstands on Saturday gathering signatures for a petition demanding NASCAR reverse its "unfair" decision to dock Gordon 100 points. Crew chief Frank Kerr also was fined $100,000, suspended for the next six Sprint Cup Series events until April 9 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
Along with the petition, "Rally for Robby" T-shirts are being made for Gordon fans to wear during this weekend's Cup events, said Sofia Lombardo, spokesperson for Jim Beam.
Also, Thomas Flocco, president and CEO of Beam Global Spirits & Wine Inc., has sent a letter addressed to NASCAR president Mike Helton, as well as other top officials, voicing the company's frustrations.
That though, is my opinion, and not NASCAR's. His car was out of spec for a NASCAR race car, and he was penalized, says the sanctioning body.
I see both sides, but come on, it truly was an honest mistake. What say you?

I say NASCAR went way too far on this one!!! Fine him, take a few points but to cause a possible shut down of a team because of something beyond their control, NO FKIN WAY!!! Like Robby or not, what NASCAR has done is wrong!!! I would say it couldn't happen to any driver/team in NASCAR but we know that isn't true. Some are exempt! It didn't take NASCAR long to show it is still a joke when it comes to the rules!!

I agree, the punishment is way out of line. It's just Nascar's way of getting back at Robby for being too independent both on and off the track. So much for the "new and improved" Nascar. You can slap a fresh coat of paint on an outhouse, but it won't hide the smell, or disguise the fact that it is still an outhouse full of crap. Works for me....

Come on NASCAR, If Dodge will verify that they sent Gordon the wrong parts, this should be a No Brainer!!
Drop the penalties!!!
Gordon may not be your favorite son Mr. Helton, but give the guy a break. He's among the last of a vanishing breed; the small team owner/operator. (The heart and soul of NASCAR's roots.)
Mr. Helton, your behaving just like George W. Bush and the Republican party; you don't care about NASCAR's base supporters anymore!!!
I'm an Earnhardt and Stewart fan, but if Dodge sent Robby the wrong parts, then maybe you should penalize the manufacturer. But how long would NASCAR last without the manufacturers?

Wow, poor Robby Gordon. Seriously, this poor guy can never catch a break! I was watching ESPN 2 (I think)Friday afternoon and they interviewed a guy from Dodge and they did admit it was their mistake in sending Robby the wrong part. I agree this penalty is extremely overkill. I mean it's not like he attempted to use jet fuel in his fuel tank or anything! NASCAR needs to get real and be more consistent but flexible as well and by flexible, I mean consider the circumstances surrounding the infraction before handing down a penalty that could possibly kill an entire season for someone.
Dave & John are right. This kind of penalty really hurts a team on its own and these types of teams are a dying breed indeed. I was saddened to hear that Boris Said may or may not make it into today's race simply because qualifying was "rained out." I really like Boris Said and think that he is an example of another guy that can't catch a break!

Shame on NASCAR for overreacting to an extremely minor and unitentional infraction. Small race teams are being forced out of business.

Isn't there some sort of list of infractions and resulting penalties from NASCAR? Or does NASCAR look at each occurence and then decide on a penalty? If the latter is the case, it sounds as though someone had a grudge against Robby Gordon and his team. I realize that not everyone likes Robby Gordon, but you would think that NASCAR officials could make judgements that were fair and unbiased. Good luck on the appeal.

You go Don, I like that new coat of paint deal and they can take there rule book and put it inside the outhouse instead of a sears catalog on this one if ya know what I mean. Sounds to me like there's still a burr in Heltons saddle on robbys little victory parade in Canada last year.
Aloha, Brad

Tony Stewart is the closest thing that NASCAR has to Dale Earnhardt. Go Tony !!!
He signed a very special picture that I took at Daytona in 2001. Dale and his boys running 1,2,3&4. It was requested during a news conference the following week. For whatever reason I was the only person to produce the photo.
When Tony signed it He said If I see that thing on e-bay I'm gonna kill you! It's pretty cool to know that a big star threatened to kill me. When he stepped out of his trailer I grabbed him by the neck of his t shirt and actually stretched it quite a bit. And that didn't even upset him. Given the fact that he has punched photographers in the face for getting in his way I was really quite surprised. He knew I was just a fan and he was really cool. NASCAR wants me to donate the picture to the hall of fame but I was hoping they might make some kind of offer. If they go easy on Robby who is also in the picture maybe I'll consider it. If they don't I want $100,000 for my one of a kind picture called 4 of a kind.
This is a true story.
Sincerely,
Mike Shay

never was much of a robby gordon fan, but i've got to respect any one man who can ruffle the feathers of the almighty nascar the way he does. they look at him as a threat to their being all powerful. stick to your guns robby. they (nascar big wigs) need to remember that the whole thing was based on individuals racing other individuals. i've given up on nascar as of this year. i'm sure they'll lose sleep over losing me as a fan.

Oh Mike,
You can't possibly give up such an amazing momento for any amount of money! Don't donate it either. You keep it. It's something that is very special to you and brings fond memories back each and every time you look at it. :-) This is of course just my opinion. :-)
I also enjoyed your little story about Tony. He is actually beginning to grow on me a bit. I never thought I would say it, I used to despise the guy, but he has done some things in the past year that are making me look at him a little differently. And I simply cannot ignore his amazing talent.

Yeah Mike, I am sure bribery and blackmail IN THE PUBLIC eye will work on Nascar.
You know, I bet Toyota sent that part to Mikey Waltrip last year with that jet fuel in it. Hey, it wasn't his fault either. I bet Chevy sent Jr's team the wrong brackets last year too. See, not his fault.
I know I am the minority on this issue but should Nascar fail to administer the same penalty they have in the other infractions regarding improper parts on cars that would be wrong.
Good luck selling your picture, just don't let Tony see the listing on Ebay. Maybe you should call a real auction house.

Robbie Gordon is a great guy and all we need to see is for him to catch a couple breaks, he was awesome in CART and I wish he could justify going back to open wheel, even for a limited schedule.
