This isn't going to go over well.Bristol Motor Speedway announced this week that beginning with the Food City 500 race weekend in March, all events -- at the speedway and dragway -- will be smoke-free in accordance with Tennessee state law.
NASCAR fans will now be limited in their smoking arrangements, with grandstands, terraces, suites, and restrooms off-limits for those who want to light up. The concourses below the grandstands will, though, still allow smoking in the area.
BMS is following along with the recent "Non-Smoker Protection Act" legislation in the Tennessee state government that prohibits smokig in sports arenas.
While some may argue that smoking is a right, I'd argue that because I'm not a fan of lighting it up, this is a good measure. I'm just not the biggest fan of inhaling smoke though I've certainly dealed with it in the past. A minor inconvenience for some for the health of all?
Sounds good to me.
(Feel free to let me know if you won't be heading to Bristol anymore because you can't smoke, I'll gladly buy your tickets)
Monster Mile Building 46-foot Monster Statue
A few years ago, Dover International Speedway started handing out race-winner trophies with "Miles", a fictional monster who has a penchant for destroying race cars that goes along with the 1-mile concrete track's nickname of the "Monster Mile".
Now, he's getting a whole lot bigger.
In 2008, Miles the Monster will become the largest attraction at a NASCAR track and will be one of the tallest fiberglass structures in the world. The Monster Monument will stand 46-feet-tall amongst race fans in the newly created Victory Plaza at Dover International Speedway.Yep, that won't be a scary thing for kids. Not at all.
I'm a fan, though.

Well I am a smoker and I have to say, I have no problem with this. I don't believe in forcing others to be around me when I choose to smoke and they don't. I don't smoke in my home in front of my children or husband. I smoke outside on my deck, even when it's freezing....I don't smooke in my car when others who don't smoke are in it and I certainly don't smoke in public places, even if outside around others who don't smoke. Aside from the enviornmental issue, it's an issue of respect as well as a health issue for those who don't smoke or choose to be around smokers. They are providing a "smoking area" for smokers. I say, that's good enough for me and should be good enough for my fellow smokers!

Same ol' bullshit. They don't mind spending the tax money generated by the tobacco industry, but they want us out of sight and sound. You know, as a smoker, I might not want your uptight, self righteous ass sitting next to me in the stands as I light one up, sip on a cold one, and prepare to enjoy the race. It's the same thing with alcohol and other products that aren't good for us. You don't mind the taxes we generate, you just don't want us living next door. And fair is fair, what about fat people, talkative people, and those who don't bathe regularly or cuss a lot. Why don't we have taxes and roped off areas for them too. The list is endless. Geez, give me a break. If you don't like smokers, drinkers and cussers, then don't go around places where they hang out. Stay at home and watch the race, boxing match, football, baseball or whatever you like, on your big screen tv. Eat your meals, and drink your wine at home too while you're at it. It's a lot more fun without you around anyway. Works for me.....

I have a cigarette burn on one of my shirts from a careless smoker sitting behind me. I have been to many races that were made miserable by someone's smoke blowing in my face. Even though we are outdoors, it doesn't mean that the smoke doesn't get in our face and we have to breathe it in. It has been scientifically proven that second hand cigarette smoke is hazardous to your health.
Cussing has not yet been proven to be hazardous to anyone's health. Alcohol consumption can be hazardous to the person consuming but not to others unless the consumer causes an accident that harms someone else.
I pay to watch a race and know the car fumes are part of the package. Cigarette smoke is something I do not pay for.
I think this smoke-free environment is a giant step forward and hope other tracks follow suit.

CR, They were smoking in the stands before you were born, they were smoking in the stands when you first started watching NASCAR. Smelling someones second hand smoke for a couple of hours isn't going to kill you. You don't mind the carbon monoxide from the cars, but you want to whine about the smokers...U F'N HYPOCRITE!!! I hope you come see the race here in Vegas, and I also hope you happen to get seated next to me. Have a nice day, you F'N hypocrite.

What a bunch of selfish ass's we have here who would stoop to a level of stupidity by claiming to blow 2nd hand smoke in someone's face during a race.
They "May have" been smoking in the stands before I was born but by God they didn't have the smarts & facts back then that the study's show today & that's 2nd hand smoke is more dangerous than inhaling the actual smoke from a cigerette. I assume these people wouldn't hesitate to blow thier 2nd hand smoke in an infants face either, which goes to show thier lack of common sense & level of selfishness.
As a medical examiner, I have seen a pair of lungs belonging to a deceased 60Y/O man who smoked 45 years of his life and I can tell you after that many years of smoking, your lungs turn black like TAR and is far from the "NORMAL" white/Pinkish tint that a normal lung should look like. If cigerette smoke you inhale does that much damage to your lung tissue...and 2nd hand smoke is MORE harmful than that example...WHY on earth should someone who chooses not to smoke be subjected to YOUR choice to damage YOUR body by inhaling your excess 2nd hand smoke?
That's the FINE line in YOUR right's to smoke. Because your choice to smoke in PUBLIC places AFFECTS the rights of those who CHOOSE to live a healthier life style by not smoking. The fact that Lawmakers and venue's such as racetracks & stadiums go out of thier way to "create" designated area's of smoking should be ENOUGH for you. When it comes to the American population and those who smoke...and those who don't...Let me remind you that those that SMOKE are the MINORITY. Smoker's should be more like Kim ...to understand the health risks involved and to not put themselves and what they think and feel before others.

I could not agree with you more, Cynthia. I know I will not be able to say it better but I will try.
I certainly recognize anyones right to smoke in the privacy of your own air space. However, you do not have the right to blow that smoke in my face. For all you people that think it is your right to just light up where you want and possibly spread the health issues Cynthia mentioned I have a great idea. We people that choose not to smoke ought to be allowed to hire an AIDS infected whore to swap bodily fluids with you. Sounds fair to me.
Look around, you are in the minority. That is exactly why places like Bristol are banning the inconsiderate behavior of some smokers. Nobody is taking away your right to kill yourself with cigarettes. We are just trying to take away the chances you have of killing the people that choose not to smoke.

Look at these comments for you low-life smokers. Your comments really speak for themselves the type of people you are. I bet all of you smoke around children. In your homes and cars. That is child abuse. I also would be that your children are always sick with sore throats and sinus and ear infections. You people are what gives nascar and its fans a bad name. Rednecks and hicks fits you all perfectly. I stopped going to Bristol because of scum like you. Now I will be back in the stands laughing and calling security each time on of you morons lights up.

You know you who do not smoke should not attend any form of motor sports since you might inhale some carbon monoxide , Ohh that is right , it is the same thing as what smokers exhale . Keep laughing at us poor smokers who are losing our rights , and I will laugh at you when something you enjoy gets relegated to the unfavorable wrath of the local and or national leaders of this country. And before you bust out that the smokers are a health risk , look at your stomach and see if it extends enough that you cannot see your shoes , If so I hope the next tax will be on your obese body !!
Smoke a pack a day and still run over 5 k daily .
