Last night, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver found himself in Scottsdale, Arizona auctioning off one his No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolets from the 2007 season.
Sold at the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company with plenty high-rollers and celebrity figures alike in attendance, the Monte Carlo racer was auctioned in the name of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation in addition to a few other items as you'll see in the clip.
Yep, that's right, well over $300,000 for a race car, a ring from Stewart's 2007 season, a helmet, and driving suit worn by Stewart himself. All in the name of a charity that supports spinal cord research.
Incredible.
Sure, Stewart's personality with the media and on-track ruffles several feathers, but you'll never hear anyone doubt his ability to give back to others.
You can follow along all day Saturday on SPEED with more from the Barrett-Jackson auction. The cars they auction are truly incredible, Bob Varsha and Mike Joy do a heck of a job commentating on the event, and there's plenty of celebrity sightings.
Evernham/Crocker Sighting: In a sign of the relationship that just won't end, Ray Evernham was at the auction with on-and-off girlfriend and occasional Craftsman Truck Series driver Erin Crocker. You can imagine that Jeremy Mayfield was happy to see that after his accusations in 2006 of a problem with the Evernham team due to that relationship.

Well Don,
Last time I checked, this was a free country! Ron & I are buddies who both happen to love the Packers. I am soooooo sorry that our little football comments that took all of two seconds to read upset you. Once again, you are an ASS! I am well aware that this is a NASCAR board, but you know what? Things have been slow lately and in case you haven't noticed, it's not NASCAR season just yet!
I am with Ron, please dazzle us with more of your crap, I mean conspiracy theories, sexist comments, and overall idiotic comments/behaviors! As always, I truly enjoy bantering back!

Oh, one more thing Don....just how much money did YOU donate to charity last year? Knowing your personality the way I think I do, I am betting the number is a big fat zero since you care only about numero uno! And if you think all NASCAR fans are "Rednecks" then what does that say about you? Do you believe you are superior to the rest of us? You're not! You're an idiot! You contradict yourself every time I turn around and you never back up any of your statements with FACTS!

Actually the MPD in NASCAR history has been Awesome Bill from Dawsonville. But I guess that kinda history doesnt hold water anymore with all the new fans that really dont know the "grass roots" version of NASCAR. I am sure they hear JR talk about it....but its not the same as growing up with it. Its a sad day when you realize your getting old. :(

MikeyMike: Awe, you're not getting old. Like you said, there are young fans out there that don't know the whole history of NASCAR. I must admit, I am in my early thirties and didn't become a fan until 1999, so I am one of those "new age fans." Sorry. I do however, spend a lot of time learning and researching about NASCAR & its history so that I can know about it and comment accordingly. It helps that I knew quite a bit about cars growing up, too as I was a tom-boy and Dad & I always worked on them together. :-)
And to Ron,
You mean my man Jimmie wasn't even in the top 5? Damn that sucks! It is so hard being me....a fan of a man that everyone around me refers to as my "bitch boy." :-(

Okay, I see Little E. as popular, that's a given. I see Stewart & Gordon of course, but Waltrip & Kahne? Did they not have the suckiest seasons ever last year? Not only was Waltrip caught cheating with what was believed to be "jet fuel," I think he may have run a total of five races, if that all season. And Kahne, he is so over-hyped as a driver. Sorry....to any of his fans but the truth hurts.
Hey Ron, where did Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, and Jimmie Johnson place? I am surprised to not see their names in the top five. Just curious...:-)

I am a little curious if other popular drivers have made any arrangements to do similar things with their old cars. These guys have a dozen cars each that are no longer allowed to race in Nascar. What was JGR going to do with an old style CHEVY this year? If more teams would donate their cars it may water down the price of each sale but it would raise millions of dollars for charity. How much money could be raised selling an old Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jeff Gordon, or Jimmie Johnson car?
I guess this just goes to show that the same passion that drives Tony Stewart to his explosive temperment at the race track also allows him to be generous to people that need it. Yes, I have often been critical of Tony Stewart. But if you are going to point out a persons shortcomings you should also be willing to give credit when credit is earned. Good job Tony.

I think what Tony did was very kind and not at all out of character for him. He has always been very giving to different charities. Where have you all been? In the last two years he has undergone a tremendous change in his "explosive temperment." He always , year after year has shown improvement in his attitude, and the way he handles himself on & off the track. That is called maturing, my friends. Tony has been my #1 for many years now and will continue to be so. He is a great driver and a wonderful person. Go Tony, you'll get 'em this year!! Real charity begins at home, and doesn't always require the public to BE THERE to announce it to everyone. Read his Bio and Fan club info before you talk about him not "giving." Yes, I agree, why not Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and the others? Because they have different 'souls" my friend!! Great effort Tony, as always, thanks: from a fan!!

Well, my opinion of Tony Stewart just went up a few notches! What a very classy thing to do. I am impressed to say the least. In fact, I truly believe that most NASCAR drivers are the most giving men in sports today. I hear this is just one of the many charitable things that Stewart has done this year along with Jimmie Johnson and his wife giving to The California Wildfires among other things as well as Kyle & Richard Petty giving to and running their Victory Junction Camp. Many of the drivers give to the Victory Junction Camp. Jamie McMurray (sorry sp?) gave to Autism this year and Reed Sorensen gave to Breast Cancer Research as well. Go NASCAR! I am very proud to be a NASCAR fan! I am curious how other sports stars in varying sports give or don't give to charity? It's not like they cannot afford to do so!

Most drivers are emotionally spirited people to begin with. It should be no suprise to see these emotions come out from time to time nor should they be punished for it. Nascar without Tony Stewart would be much less of a sport. My hat is off to Tony and all drivers and teams who give unselfishly (not always reported) every year to those less fortunate.

Hi Ron!
I am sooooooo bummed about our Packers! I know you are, too. I thought they had them! I can't believe Farve threw an Interception and the Giant's kicker who had missed two easy 25 foot field goal attempts nails a 43 yarder to win the game! Ugh, devasting to say the least! I am just hoping with all hope The Giants will beat the Patriots. They have it coming in my opinion. :-)
Anyhoo, there's always next year sweetie! :-)

Hi Kimi,
Yeah i was really bummed out but like you say there's always next year. It's time for GB to get a dome. Having to play in those conditions is ridiculous. They had a great year and they are a young team so maybe......... Take care Kimi

Come on people, Stewart is still a spoiled brat and a cry baby to boot. Duh, he didn't own the car he auctioned off, so it's not like he reached into his own pocket to help others. A lot of sports figures and celebrities donate to charity, it's called a tax break.....geez. You rednecks are a PR man's dream, you bite before the bait is even on the hook. Ahem, and this is supposed to be about Nascar, so what's with the football comment. Shape up or ship out people, the season is upon us. Works for me.....

No Don, he did not own the car. And as I said, what was JGR going to do with an old body style Chevy any ways? But the point is that they found a way to help a charity instead of having the car go on tour and sit in some grocery store parking lot for some PR. I do believe Tony owned the driving suit and the ring he kicked in. Now, a driving suit can be replaced, but how do you replace the ring he kicked in? Hey ordinarily you will find me at the head of the line to kick Tony Stewart but not this time.
I looked but could not find the actual top five from 2007 MOST POPULAR DRIVER. I do know that Dale Jr was 1, and Jeff Gordon was 2. Chances are very good that Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart were 3 and 4. Now, yes, all these guys do have some charity they are involved in and most of the time we do not get to see the things they do or how they either directly give or help with their celebrity status in fund raising. But I feel that JGR set a good example of how they could give without it directly costing them what the end reward was. Yes, some of the parts on that car could have been recycled in some way. But was there $275,000 worth of stuff on that car they could use this year? I doubt it. So, rather than mothball the car they gave it to an organization that was able to maximize the popularity of Tony Stewart and auction off the car for some much needed research money.
Dale Jr has been the most popular driver for 5 years in a row. How much money do you think a "last season it has ever been run" #8 Budweiser car would sell for? yes, I know the Teresa bashers are going to jump all over this one but making that donation would do a world of good for both of them. His name and her property working together, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Sorry, my ADD kicked in again. Once again all I can say is that JGR and Tony Stewart set a great example. It's OK for the other top teams and drivers to copy it, the charities they support will not mind one bit.
