SportsBusinessDaily reports that ABC's broadcast of last Sunday's Subway 500 NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Martinsville Speedway earned a final Nielsen Media Research rating of 3.7--down from 4.1 when NBC aired the race last year.
When your race broadcast gets preempted for local coverage and the network hasn't ensured that local affiliate has a backup plan or backup station to move the breaking news coverage, you get fewer eyeballs watching the race.
On the other hand, the Craftsman Truck Series Martinsville race enjoyed an 18% increase in viewership on The Speed Channel--you might be familiar with the network where more than one of their commentators actually know a thing or two about NASCAR.
Get a clue, NASCAR! It's time to kick ESPN/ABC to the curb and partner with Fox and Fox-owned Speed TV for the entire season.

You can blame ESPN/ABC but we should keep in mind a lot of the drop has to do with the product. The ratings have been down regardless of who airs the races. The second largest market in the country is not much of a market for NASCAR anyway. They would probably have gotten more complaints if they has skipped the news and aired the race.

The problem here is that ESPN is catering to its own corporate make up. They think it is proper to have the women in the broadcast position for looks, and not for knowledge. (WOMEN WITH KNOWLEDGE of the sport they are broadcasting are VERY MUCH NEEDED). ESPN needs to concentrate on giving a good broadcast and less on the fluff.

The dropping tv ratings just reflect the dropping attendance at the tracks, as well as national interest in the sport. Nascar has refined their product until it has become stale and boring. Truck racing is doing well because it is the closest thing to real racing on the market today.I doubt you could put cup racing on a religous channel and raise enough revenue to buy a priest a jar of vaseline and a sack of candy.

Don Emerson,
Your comment was almost intelligent. Once you and you hillbilly lippit Nascar fans step out of your permanent roles in "Deliverance", you'll see that the rest of the country finally realized that watching over-paid dirt farmers to drive in a circle for 4 hrs, then have to suffer through their "almost english" interviews just plain SUCKS!!!!
Q: "what does a southerner say after sex"??
A: "Thanks , mom"!!!

NASCARS is too 'planned' out like WWE. Everyone knows wrecks will happen in the last 10 laps and the ole green/white checkered flag will come out. Lets move races to texas and california, 'known' for their love of NASCAR. What a joke NASCAR is!!!!

I know that modern day NASCAR racing can get pretty boring and the ratings show that. Do any of you nice people on this, the cars sre like IROC cars (no real Fords, Chevys, Dodges, and Toyotas) The drives are to PC. The management (the France family and friends) will do what they can to reduce the sport BUT keep the money coming in from the newbies. As far as the television coverage goes we have people in the broadcast booth who should be in the pits as reports. And lastly don't you think that 24/7/365 of NASCAR is a bit much. SPEED is saturated with NASCAR, ESPN will soon be the same way
Anyway Have A Great Weekend and Week

Well first thing. ABC/ESPN has the worst coverage and booth men around they suck!!!! Next thing the COT car sucks. 43 CARS THAT ALL LOOK THE SAME They took racing out of racing. How long before GM and Ford take their money and leave. They have taken thinking and innovation out of NASCAR and the spirit .Yes the car's are safer and that's great. But they could have done that with what they have.the car don't resemble anything that we drive.Isnt that what Nascar is supposed to be.

There's nothing wrong with women covering NASCAR, just make sure it's someone good to look at that actually knows what she's talking about - someone like say...WENDY VENTURINI from The Speed Channel ! She grew up in racing, and actually has something original and noteworthy to say. I hate the way ESPN tries to cater to and be all things to all sports. PLEASE drop the little ticker at the bottom of the screen updating me with all other sports ! IF I WANTED TO KNOW, then I would flip over to ESPN 1, OR The Deuce, or the OCHO during a commercial break.

Hey Darth, know what a yankee says after sex? Nothing, he justs lets the dog back outside. You northerners can keep your lousy weather,15 dollar hamburgers, and overweight, over painted women. And if you don't like the southern way of living, try Alaska for your next vacation. I hear those dog sled races are real exciting.

I have been a Nascar fan since 1972. The worst race coverage I have ever seen is ESPN/ABC. Commercials during restarts, split screen with football coverage and scores. The announcers are pathetic !! Very few pitstop times. If they don't switch to Fox/Speed cocerage I'm packing it in.

My first thought on this was so what, the 25 Nascar fans in California did not get to see the race. While the Malibu market may be located in the second largest ADI in the country, it hardly has the second largest Nascar fanbase in the country. Of that 9.8% drop, I would imagine about .2% may have been the California market. The rest is due to A) the piss poor coverage ABC has and B) the fact that drivers in contention to win the cup are dropping like flies and so are their fans. Remember the reason for the chase to begin with? The only reason Gordon has not been handed the trophy with three races left is due to the chase. At least now the Gordon and Johnson fans have a good reason to watch.

Darth, if you were refering to the roots of Nascar it was born out of the moonshine trade with the guys having to be good enough drivers to outrun the cops. If you are going to disparage the farmers of America, try not to do it with your mouth and your belly full.

We watch a part of Nascar every week but not like we did when Daryl Waltrip was color commentating. It's so boring. Bring back Fox, Waltrip and the gang.
