Jeff Gordon's pass for the win? Exciting. Two and Three-wide racing? We saw it.
Drivers facing trepidation and twittling thumbs for about 180 of the 188 laps ran during Sunday's UAW-Ford 500 at Talladega Superspeedway? That just wasn't cool.
The NASCAR Nextel Cup series put on a decent show Sunday, but decent doesn't fill seats. The Car of Tomorrow big track debut wasn't horrendous, but it wasn't magical either.
For much too long Sunday, it was obvious drivers were scared to be aggressive or dice for the lead. Single-file packs and drivers purposely staying at the back of the pack to avoid trouble just doesn't cut it at this level.
Jeff Gordon managed to pull off the race win by sailing through the draft after a restart with eight laps to go but for a large majority of Sunday's race, Gordon rode around at times five to seven seconds behind the leader with teammate Jimmie Johnson and other Chase contenders.
That's not racing. That's riding.
Gordon didn't much enjoy it either.
"It was terrible," Gordon said. "It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in a race car. I like to think that I've got pretty good patience, but that's beyond patience. There's just nothing fun about that, but I knew it was a smart thing.Think the Car of Tomorrow needs some work before Daytona? You better believe it.
"I've never yawned in a race car in my life and I yawned back there."
Thankfully, though, NASCAR has time and plenty of information now under their belt to figure out to make the new body styles draft better together and handle with more driver input.
Hopefully they'll take the time to figure that out.

I saw alot of empty seats down the backstretch and along the frontstretch where you could see the checkered flag paint scheme on the seats. I wonder if nascar will take a race away from Talladega and California for not selling out like they did Darlington? Fair is fair right? Now that Darlington sells out their race maybe they should get the labor day race back.

the whole thing just pisses me off. They stay in back for almost the whole race, till the very last laps, then comes up there and gets the win. Makes me completely sick. My driver stayed up there, put on a good fight, and what does he get, an 8th place finish. That does not even come close to where he drove the whole race. Not only does he lead the 2nd most laps, but he is still 154 out from the leader in the chase, WHEN THEY SPENT MOST OF THE DAY IN BACK? Explain that to me?
JUST MAKES ME SICK!~!
Jeffy and Jimmy can both kiss my A**!~!

Whether exciting or not the fact still remains that Gordon & Johnson drove a smart race. And why are we singling them out? There were others that went with them, too. It's called racing folks! They knew that there would be "a big" one with a few "little ones" in between. They knew they had good cars, so they stayed in the back, drove a smart race, made smart pit calls (except for that one poor exception to Gordon's team, but they clearly rebounded), came in first and second, and gave us one HELL of a finish to a rather boring race indeed. I'll take watching the two of them battle each other for the lead anyday over any other driver. And you know what's really cool? They remain the best of friends. Now that's a TEAM!
Get of thier backs! And "B" I am assuming by "your driver" you are referring to Stewart? Perhaps if Stewart could learn some patience on the track like Gordon, Johnson, Mears, and others, he too could have finished a better race. He deserved to lose. By the way, notice he has NO FRIENDS on a track where you NEED them. Perhaps he needs to change his attitude if he wants to win more races! Just my opinion, of course!

Jeff Gordon bot only has talent, he has patience. The win was deserved. Jeff bounced back after the bad pit stop. Staying out of the big one and small ones are smart driving. YOU GO JEFF!!!!

Stewart has no friends on the track because he has no friends off the track.
I guess he did not learn anything from Dale Sr. Trying to block more than one lane of traffic will get you killed. That move he pulled at the end of the race looked just like the move that got Dale Sr killed. He is lucky he finished the race. Had he caused another BIG ONE I am sure it would have been whoevers fault that was trying to pass him.
I am sorry the race was not exciting for you Geoffry. I wrote many posts this past two weeks on how boring it was going to be until the end. I pretty much nailed it, CHOO CHOO. Personally, watching Jeff Gordon go from last place on the lead lap to taking the checkered flag in under twenty laps was just about as exciting as it gets.
Even the ABC crew knew that none of the good drivers wanted to be in front until the last lap. Did Tony Stewart not get that memo? I am sure those lead laps looked great to his fans but I bet he would go back and trade that 8th place finish for all of thise lead laps.
Seeing the whole Hendricks team make that charge and hearing the crowd go wild when it happened had me jumping in my living room. I loved it. It all happened in the last twenty laps, when the real race begins. How many laps do you have to lead a race to win? ONE.

REAL DRIVERS AND REAL CHAMPIONS DRIVE IN THE FRONT
and they battle the ups and downs of the race just like real solders do in a war.
ONLY THE SHEEPS HIDE BEHIND THE LIONS OF WAR.

Yea Anna. How many generals have you ever seen on the front lines? While General MacArthur was certainly a great man, he did not show up until most of the battle had been won. He did not land in the Philipines until the beach had been taken. Oh yes, he did do it now and then but he did not reside there. He hung out in the back while the grunts slugged it out.
I am sure you have played chess at some point in time. The pawns are out front sacrificing themselves for the eventual win.
General Hendricks did the same thing Sunday.

I saw something yeaterday that I hoped I'd never see in Nascar, since ir's ruined F1 and Indy car. And that was blocking by the team drivers to protect team members who were ahead of them. Tactits like this have no place in Nascar, and they should everything they can to put a stop to it. In the final Indy car race of the season, Dana Patrick spun out on the entrance to pit road, bringing out a caution flag . This enabled her teammate Franchetti to catch up to the leader and ultimately win the race and the championship. Blocking not only cheats the fans of a level playing field, it is also dangerous as Earnhardt Sr found out at Daytona. Nascar was not founded as a team sport, but it can surely die out at the hands of it.

Considering you mentioned Sr blocking and killing himself in the process, was he not blocking so that his team mate could win the race? I believe Sr was in third place at the time and he was blocking for Mikey Waltrip. I could be wrong about this but if I am right, how could this Sunday have been the first time you ever saw it?

I think you meant Dannika Patrick? I am not sure what your point was in your posting. Were you defending teams or against supporting teams? Just so you know, Nascar is a team sport & has been. The teams are just larger now a days. And it is clear to me that the best men & best teams are doing the winning!

MIKE I EXPECTED YOUR REPLY SINCE IN THE ABOVE BLOG OF MINE THE SHEEPS WERE JG/JJ.
YOU ARE RIGHT; GENERALS DO NOT FIGHT WARS.
THAT's because generals have already fought their war in the past and their talent on the battlefield against all enemyes is what kept on promoteing them to the hi stages of the military piramid.
GEN. MCCARTUR HAD CLIMBED HIS LOW AND MIDDLE HEIGHTS OF that same piramid when he was in world war 2 in the JAPANESE TEATRE OF OPERATION. As a front line colonel back than he comanded and guided the landing
of the marines in okinava in midway island and the indonesian and malesyian islands.HE ALSO FOLLOWED AND CHASED THE NORTHCOREANS IN CHINESE TERRITORY DURING THE KOREAN WAR in the active battelfield along with his solders. That's when he said to his superiors in washinghton: ONLY SHEEPS HIDE BEHIND THE LIONS OF WAR.AS you probably already know, he got
ragged on and punished for following the enemy in a
another land where they were taking refuge.MANY WOULD DONE THE SAMETHING AND SO WOULD I. THE HELL WITH THE POOLITICIANS.
OLD SOLDERS WILL NEVER DIE.THEY ONLY FADE AWAY.
You probably know that one already.

Yeah Earnhardt wrecked trying to block when there was no need to. The race was over and no one could have caught Mikey or Jr. That's my point, when you take the team concept onto the track, you're asking for trouble. You're gonna piss the fans off, the other drivers off, and change the face of cup racing.
Blocking, causing a yellow flag when needed for another teammate, and givng up your position to help another teammate gain points is not what Nascar was founded on nor designed for. But it's headed that way, and all we can do is watch Nascar fade away into the sunset, as did F1 and Indy car. I might have screwed up Patrick's first name, but then I don't follow Indy car racing, so I thought I did pretty good getting the last name right. And Ron, the conspiracy theory was never meant for you. Only people with an open mind, and the ability to think for themselves need apply. Drag racing is entertainment, not a sport, and you can see it on any street in town. So take a chill pill dude, sorry I caused your shorts to get in a wad. Whoops. gotta go, the light just turned green......later ya'll.

#7 Mike, I agree with you. It is wise to take car of your equipment. Hey, I'd try to stay out of trouble too!! This was Jeff Gordon's sixth win at Talladega. I say Jeff knew exactly what he was doing and it appears his decision was right.........he won. I am glad that the fans were warned about throwing things at the winner. It was a disgrace to all fans to see the behavior when Jeff won there in April. Quite frankly, anyone who acts like that should be handcuffed and go to jail. Poor sportsmanship is a bad thing to teach our children.
