Speaking of playboy tendencies ... When I saw the Fanhouse post about the Iowa high school football players got suspended for gesturing in a team photo, my mind immediately went to all the photos of NASCAR drivers that I have seen displaying "the shocker."
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Martin Truex Jr. ... Brian Vickers .... Denny Hamlin and Reed Sorenson ... the list goes on.
Boys will be boys? Well, maybe that flies for the high school kiddos, but what's up with our drivers in this "family" sport? What's their excuse?
Do these guys really hold true the belief that "women are sexual objects, toys, things with which to be played and dominated?" Or have they just not matured yet? I'm sure Sherry Pollex, Truex's girlfriend, is real proud to claim her man in that photo. At least it's from 2004 and predates their relationship. She seems to have straightened him out--I don't recall a more recent one of Truex doing the shocker. Wish I could say the same about Junior.
Could this behavior have more to do with why he is single than he "hasn't run into any winners yet?" What "winner" is going to respect a guy who goes around giving women the fingers in photos? Nasty. Do you know where those fingers have been?
So, fans, we gonna tell the boys their shocking opinion of women just ain't cool? or do we just let the boys be boys?

I guess I'm not up on my hand gestures, but its pretty clear that Martin and junior aren't even making the same gesture. Either could have been accounted for by drunkem flailing.
If they have been making rude gestures, they maybe just don't have a deep understanding of how some people view them. Whats a peace out in the states is actually vulgar in the UK, and at one time most four letter words and "the finger" were considered far more vulgar than at present.
Call me crazy but I think most 8 fans are going to be more upset he's hanging out with Kurt Busch (HE DRINKS MILLER! AAAAH).

i don't even know what the gesture means-but i'm sure they didn't meanany disrespect by it. and i'm sure that what jr meant when he said he hadn't found any "winners" yet is that he hasn't found any woman who respects herself yet. i mean come on-these guys are used to women jumping their bones the minute they are alone with them. no self respecting woman would act this way even if the guy is DALE EARNHARDT JR. i'm the worlds biggest jr fan, so i say that with respect.no body wants to get serious with a girl thats been around the block with every guy on the team.remember that denny hamlin. you might be in the next paris video

If you really think NASCAR is a "family sport", then you have a shockingly bad grasp of history.

I'm sure you have never "flipped" any one off. It's quite appearent you are star struck by these drivers as you hang on every comment or jesture. Maybe you should graduate from "milk" to something a little more adult.

The fingers ain't the story here,it's how drunk they all look. Busch is just trying to show he is a regular guy, Truex is just drinking with the boss, but what is Jr doing. He shouldn't gripe about the women until he cleans up his act. But boys will be boys, so no harm, no foul. As for you, try and keep the raging hormones out of your writing, it shows badly.

I personally don't think doing the shocker is that big of a deal. Aren't there more important issues facing America today than some athlete making a harmless hand gesture?
That photo looks like it was taken in a private setting. It's not like they did it at the racetrack during an interview. I'm sure they were just goofing off with friends. These guys work hard. They should be allowed to let loose every once in a while.

I don't think it is a very 'private' setting, if this was taken by a newspaper, or whatever that is. But it isn't a personal picture.
I don't find a harm in it, to a certain extent. I don't think the guys mean any disrespect towards women in it, but I think it is like you said they need someone(like Sherry) to step into there lives and tell them, that it isn't funny and it isn't 'cool' to do. And it maybe the reason half of them are single. BUT I don't think it is anything Nascar should step in on, because it is really none of NASCAR's business, because as stated above, I have yet to see them do it while in uniform.

I was once told: "Men, two heads, no brain and only enough blood to run one at a time". Plus guys think about sex every 7 seconds or so. Its what they do, especially at that age. As potential "role models" ALL athletes, public figures and celebrities should be more responsible in how they portray themselves. BUT, all we are basing our opinions on here is one picture (in this instance) and we don't know the context or what exactly was going on at that moment. Guys will be guys, even those in the public eye. We can't expect them to be "well-behaved and proper" 100% of the time. I mean good grief, Carl Edwards throws his tantrums every once in a while and they could have killed pit crew members or injured other racers. These guys are just having fun, and if their actions offend you, then they probably aren't the guys for you.

Learn something new every day...even if it's totally useless hand gestures...lol...only a man can find so may use(less/ful) hand gestures such as the shocker (follow threads to widipedia explanation on shocker) or gang signs or.....or what ever. Some days I wished as much creativity were used in peoples lives and directed in positive ways (world peace, aids issues, poverty), just a couple pressing issues. Hand signals for sex....lol...what happened to the peace sign?

WOW!! I am dumbstruck by all the ignorance I'm hearing in some of these comments. "Boys will be boys," "they meant no disrespect"?? I didn't know what that gesture meant until comment #5 clarified it for me. That offends me. What happened to respect in general towards women. Men didn't act so blatantly like that years back. Do you guys think Junior would give his mother a gesture like that? Would you?
"Boys will be boys" What a lame excuse. The article, I'm sure, is not based on this one picture because I have seen the gesture made in several pictures myself. I find that gesture to a lot worse that the middle finger as it is blatant disrespect towards women. Excusing something like that, the way you all do, is exactly why you are asking yourselves "what's wrong with our youth today... why are they having sex and thinking about sex the way they do, at such a young age..." Its because of your attitudes, excusing this kind of behavior, where they learn the same attitudes and then it carries on down the generations. A lot of men, not all, need to start re-learning what respect is about and women need to stop taking that crap and just dismissing it as "boys will be boys." That's a load of crap.

Shell (Michelle), I personally would love to meet a chivalrous man who treats women as the princesses and queens that we are, but I am being realistic. Sadly yes, respect for women and respect in general is somethign that is seldom taught to todays youth. I only say that "Guys will be Guys" because I've realized that is what drunken 20 and 30-something guys do. I have mostly male friends and I take their actions in stride, when they cross the line, I tell them, but in the general guys defense: there are women that do not act like those who should earn respect. Its a girls perogative to dress sexily and flirt, but there is a line where they are inviting lewd behavior (please do not misconstrue this for a "she was asking for it" excuse in terms of sexual assault etc). Again, this is their private life, and its not our place to judge them based on one photo, or to make them bear the burden of teaching respect to today's youth. As long as these guys aren't hurting anyone, or giving gestures like this while in their NASCAR firesuits, let them live their life. Teaching respect for others is something that PARENTS need to do, and we can only strive to be sure that if/when we have our own children we remember that.

MAYBE IF WOMEN RESPECTED THEMSELVES MORE THEN MEN WOULD TOO. YOU CAN'T RUN AROUND JUMPING IN THE SACK WITH EVRY ATHLETE, RACE CAR DRIVER, ROCK STAR ETC.
JUST BEACUSE THESE GUYS ARE FAMOUS AND THEN TURN AROUND AND DEMAND RESPECT.GO TO A BAR SOMETIME AND LOOK AT HOW SOME WOMEN ACT,OR TO A CONCERT.REMEMBER "GIRLS GONE WILD" VIDEOS? IT'S NOT JR OR TRUEX OR ANYBODY ELSE'S FAULT THAT THE MAJORITY OF WOMEN NOWADAYS IS A USELESS MATTRESS FOR EVERY MAN SHE SEE'S TO FALL ON.YOU WANT RESPECT-EARN IT. I'M A WOMAN BY THE WAY.AND I'M SURE MOST DECENT WOMEN WILL AGREE WITH ME.

I guess I'm not all that bothered by the hand gesture at all. Yeah it's crude but I hang out with a lot of guys and see it all the time (And hear things that would make my grandmother roll in her grave!) there are several pictures of me doing the same pose with them. I'm with someone else who commented earlier on this.... At least their not killing dogs.

post 14 makes a very good point. Look at that woman at the Tim & Faith concert who grabbed Tim's crotch!!!!
Women aren't exactly acting all ladylike and prim and proper all the time these days. Go anywhere that famous athletes hangout, and you will find lots of loose women willing to do pretty much anything these guys could imagine, and even stuff they hadn't.
And I'm 44 years old, been reading car magazines since I was like 10. Women have always been sprawled out in the pages of car mags in swim suits. This isn't something new in the car world.
Anyone offended by this photo or attitude---spend a weekend in the infield at Talladega....

I think some of you need to calm down for slamming TGOM for posting this.... For the most part it's true. From trying to put up the front that they are "good clean boys" is a far cry from the truth for most of them.
Regardless, I'm fans anyway.
But I do agree that Junior's actions is part of the reason he hasn't met a "winner". Doesn't seem like most of the women involved with him have met much of a winner either lol

Should I feel bad for laught my A** off? NO
I followed the leads to the other article, went to Wikipedia, and read about the sign, and several others and found myself laughing. Who ever thought these up, why could they not have put that energy to use on something so much better. But he didn't. I am not offened by it. I know I should be, but I am not wasting my energy on something so stupid. And it is stupid. So they are making hand gestures. SO WHAT!~! It only has meaning if you let it. And several of you have let it. Take the power away from them. Laugh at it, then it won't be cool to do it. People waste to much energy on small things like this, when they can put that energy somewhere else. I just do not get it.
