Despite his incredible point lead, Jeff Gordon doesn't have a bone in his body that is relaxing in his pursuit of his fifth championship. That anxiety likely led to his spin with less than two laps to go, taking the No. 24 out of its tenth road course win and opening the door for a knocking Tony Stewart.
Gordon had less than a one second lead on lap 89 when he drove his Chevrolet Impala a little deep into Turn 1 and wheel-hopped the rear end. Seconds later, Gordon was back in the gas but sitting ninth.
"We gave up 20 [points] because I didn't get the 10 that would have kept him from getting the 10," Gordon said. "Had I won, I would have gained 10 points, so I would have been 20 points more ahead of him than I am now." [...] "Just stupid," Gordon said. "I knew I had to push. Tony was really good. I wanted that win really bad. ... I pushed and I pushed too far. What happened is the team deserved to win, and the driver didn't get it done."
For a guy who had just lost the race in a solo spin, the thoughts he offered the media afterwards were pretty darn classy.
If Gordon rallies back and picks up a win or two, his thoughts of mistake will deeply subside -- unless Tony takes the season title by 20 or less points.
That could hurt, for sure.

Comments (Page 1 of 1)
With his comments after the race, gained him a little respect from me to. He admitted he screwed up. And the fact admitted that Tony was good, was surprising to me as well. I may not like Jeff Gordon, but I do have a little respect for him now, and will admit that he is a pretty good darn driver. I know that is alot more then some fan's of other drivers will say. If he keeps this up I will not be able to call him plastic any more.
iam a jeff gordon fan..i think him and tony are in a class by them selfs..but when your that far ahead in points, why push it..your a shoe in for the chase..you push it when the chase starts.
It just goes to show you that even the best drivers in the world can have a momentary lapse in concentration.

That was a hell of a race at the end by two excellent drivers.
I couldn't agree more with your article. As always, Jeff Gordon proves he is a "class act." He is such a professional and instead of blaming his team, other drivers, or bad tires, he blamed himself, since he was the one who made a mistake which cost him the race. And for him to comment on what a good driver Stewart is, just proves to me even more that he is a much better driver, classier person, and role model than Tony Stewart could ever be! You know if it were Tony in Jeff's shoes after Sunday's race, he'd be blaming Jeff. Sorry folks, but it's the truth.
Good Luck Jeff!

Duh...for all you Gordon "junkies", how could he not admit to making a mistake when it was shown live on national television. It doesn't show class, it just shows a guy smart enough not to deny screwing up in front of so many witnesses, and not having another driver close enough to blame the wreck on. As far as the chase.....put a fork in him, he's done.
To Don:
Just curious, Don....Do you like ANY NASCAR drivers or even like NASCAR? All of your posts are always negative and it seems you have nothing nice to say about any one single driver. Do you even have a favorite or do you just enjoy irritating those of us who do by making negative comments about our favorite drivers?
Kim
Come on everyone we all know that dumbass Don Emerson is a JR fan. that should explain everything. Don you are really stupid. Jeff Gordon is already locked in the chase as of Sunday with a ninth place finish by the way where does that leave JR? Talk about putting a fork in some one HE is done maybe next year at HMS huh? JR nation hated the fact that he was coming to a "cheaters"team hell he started the cheating now JR nation cannot wait for next year at HMS. Don't worry Don won't do him any good ther either. He already has a fork in his back maybe you should have one in yours. Gordon has more class than Tony will ever have.
Hey guys take it easy...and no I don't like Nassycar as it is today. Somewhere along the way the stuffed shirts in the main office lost sight of the thing that made it in the first place, the core of it's being...the fan. What we have today is a shadow of what racing used to be. It's all about the money, the image, and being politically correct. Instead of drivers with courage and personality we have technicians driving computer generated cars on boring tracks of the same design. If you really love racing, you can't be happy with the slick polished cardboard product being shoved down your throat today. We, as fans, are the only thing that can change it by speaking up and demanding a change. So jump on me if you want, but try and see, as well as understand where I'm coming from.
Well Jr fans know that being honest is the only thing Jr is about. Any time something happens to his car, on the track or whatever, he telling it like it is and not saying someone else did it. So yes there is a Jr nation, more then any other drive, always will be...........Go Jr. the sea of Red or whatever color will follow. As for Gordon, agree he had to say it this time, not wine like the baby he is or might get his hands dirty.......
To #10 Mcmahan - Yeah that's right Jr wants to join a whiney team Get real dude! Gordon has always admitted his mistakes not cty on the radio like Jr when he just can't get any help. Won't get any next year either. He is on his own. Time to put up or shut up no more excuses for JR. Dream all you want to that's all it will be is a dream. Let's see if he makes it to the chase this year and what excuse he has but himself if he doesn't. Man up Jr and you 2 Mcmahan.
Well Don Emereson stay off of the NASCAR BLOGS THEN IF YOU DONT LIKE NASCAR LIKE THE REST OF US .......
PLEASE.......FOR THE SAKE OF ALL OF THE READERS AND YOUR DAM NASSYCAR........FREEWAY GO PLAY IN THE MIDDLE OF IT AND TRY DODGING THE CARS PLEASE.....
JEFF GORDON IS JUST STUPID
To Don:
You must be an "old time fan" then, which is okay, but times, they are a changin! If you don't like Nascar anymore because you believe it is a "sissy" sport, than may I suggest you go watch IRL Racing, since it hasn't evolved much over the years. Are you resistent to all change in life or just Nascar?
Kim
He really is getting dumber as he gets older. I thought that you were suppose to get smarter as you aged, just some more of his intelligents coming out.
Emerson a jr fan. I don't think so. He puts Jr dowm like he does all drivers except JPM. In one of his posts he tells JPM he "has his back" in case anyone gives him any trouble. Cracked me up.
To Nancy - look out you are sounding pretty stupid yourself! let me guess Jr or smoke? Guess they haven't made mistakes huh? just like you? Sounds like
your intelligents has fallen by the way side. Wise up girl.
jeff is not stupid you are just jealous
I think someone is jinxing Jeff! Two races in a row that he could have won but didn't. Jeff Gordon, to me, is the consumate driver of NASCAR today. Many dislike him because he does not fit the "old boy" cookie cut mold of a race car driver from days old. Many also don't like him because they are truly jealous of his excellent and astounding win/loss record. It's only a matter of time before Jeff picks up his next championship...perhaps this year? That still remains to be seen as he has truly excellent competition to overcome. I feel he will be crowned champion because of his consistency through out the year. Consistency is what wins championships and he's truly shown that this year.
