It's a lonely time for Michael Waltrip. In case you missed it, Waltrip wrecked for the second straight week in qualifying for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600. To make matters worse, another team car of David Reutimann crashed in qualifying, leaving only Dale Jarrett in the race from MWR.
Both were cases of a drivers trying to take a bad race car and run it over its limit. Neither made the show.
Michael's brother, Darrell was pretty upset because he knows how much Mikey has been through this season. The SPEED Channel analyst brought up an interesting idea for MWR during a commercial break from qualifying coverage. (Thank you, racing scanner)
Darrell Waltrip's suggestion for his brother's team?
Stop racing the 'old car'. Don't even show up for races that don't have next year's Car of Tomorrow competition. Take a attitude of "if there's no wing, we aren't rac-ing".
Is the idea at all feasible right now? Not really.
Does it make sense for the struggling MWR team? You bet.
Right now, Waltrip hasn't made a race since Daytona and he's trying jumpstart a three new teams with a new manufacturer. To make matters worse, he can't even run the same car design all the time.
DW suggested testing all the time at every track you can with next year's car instead of racing the old one. After all, Waltrip won't be back in the top 35 this season.
Would NAPA, Burger King, or UPS go for that idea? I'd highly doubt it -- unless a plan was worked out where money was returned, a smaller budget for only testing was used, or if Waltrip worked to develop the Toyota Camry more in the Busch Series with those sponsors onboard..
Waltrip can hold out hope that things are going to turn around, but frankly they aren't going to improve enough during 2007. He won't make it back to the top 35.
It is time for Waltrip to step back, re-evaluate, and come to the conclusion that running this year's car will only put his team further behind for the full-time COT in 2008.
Note: Your's truly has made the trek this weekend for the 12th straight year to this year's edition of the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte. Forget the fact that I reside less than 20 miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the real fun on Memorial Day Weekend is off of Highway 29 in Concord, NC. I'll provide you with some posts over the next few days relating to the action on -- and off -- the track, live from Lowe's!

DW has a point, concentrate on where your going. They should follow the KISS program (keep it simple stupid). Why work diligently on a program that will be all but obsolete in a half a season. Actually, should really work on building a good organization first. New cars, a new team, a new team owner, a new manufacture all in the same season. I am surprised MW hasn’t had a nervous breakdown yet.
Really, this season is shot. Now it is nothing more than an extended “test” session. Take some time and get it right. Then be ready to be competitive in ’08. It took a couple to years for the Toyota truck program to really make a mark.
.
Hang in there Toyota, MWR can do it if they get the teams SH()&* together first.

Can someone out there let us all know? How can Michael Waltrip's team be doing so bad compared to everyone else are the Toyota cars really that bad? Or is it as easy as (Bad skills) the drivers not reacting fast enough to keep the cars on the track when they get loose! What is going on with that? MW may have bitten off more than he can chew.

I believe MW may have already had a nervous breakdown. Remember the no reason car wreck he had a few weeks ago and then ran away from and later couldn't be found? Supposedly alcohol wasn't involved. Hmmmm. Makes me wonder. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the guy. He has bitten off way too much to chew. I agree with you and DW. He should focus only on the COT at this point. The rest of the season is clearly already lost. I miss Dale Jarrett!

Kim - I honestly feel that the problems with MWR is not the nut holding the steering wheel. But the team that is suppose to make sure the nut is the right place and tighten properly seems to have other thing to tend to. Like Goo in the intake, tryin to sneak someone into a cup race.......come on guys get with the program.
I am hopeful that the sponsor dont leave before they get it right.
I miss the happy go lucky MW we used to have.
Agreed - - GO DALE GO

I agree. I too miss the happy go lucky Michael Waltrip and am so pleased that Dale made it into the race this weekend. Let us hope he can do something with that Toyota and have a good finish on Sunday.
I am married to a UPSer and mum seems to be the word. They have always been very supportive of DJ so I don't see why they would stop now. I am a little worried about NAPA though and feel bad for Dominos since they are a new sponsor this year. Hopefully, like you said, they will get their s%^* together! :-)

Frankly, I am a little bit tired of "Poor Mikey" and his Jap Junk. He went with Toyota because of the money, don't ever forget that. Now the only race he has qualified for he cheated to get in! How sad for a former Daytona 500 winner. He never had that problem when he drove for DEI and had a chevy?!?! So what is his problem, too much pressure, his wife being the car owner, and his brother trying to give him a plug every other minute on TV, and the Toyota people here from Japan wondering why he can't drive! It is the money and the driver. Time to hang it up!

That’s an excellent idea. Penske would most likely have more success quicker than most any other team. The resources avaialbe to the team are astronomical. That is if Honda doesn’t have screaming fit. Penske Racing has NO history with a Toyota powered race vehicle. Benz, Honda, Jasper, Cosworth, Ford, I could be wrong.
If Penske were to bring on Toyota they would have to bring Rusty back to the game. No driver in history can put blame on a car or anything else, better than he does.
What’s the inside line on the sponsors waiting in line…..surely not HONDA. Maybe Firestone?
With all that negativity I still think it’s a great idea.

I am still wondering why anyone invested so much in Mikey. He was a middle to back of the pack guy his whole career. I admit he did win at a couple of "plate" races but that was only because D.E.I. had a superior plate program at the time.
If I were one of his sponsors I would jump ship at the first opportunity.
He has already started campaigning to change qualifying so that he can make a race every now and then. Has he no shame?
Don't even get me started on D.W. always talking about poor Mikey,he knows that Mikey has never been a great or even good driver, why should he be any better now?

When I see a car wreck each week, and timemates have the same problems, with proven drivers, this is clearly a problem with chassic, or setup, Same thing each and every week. Got to change what we are taking to the track, Got to go outside the shop, New heads are required "Now". Sorry, but that's the way it is. It's time to say, heres the job, it's yours to keep. Good luck,

Someone needs to explain to me the point of the Busch series? I watched some of the race tonight and there must have been at least 10 fans in the stands. Also, what's the point of having a JV team if all the varsity guys play in the game anyways?

I blame Toyota. They made a terrible selection when they chose Mikey. His performance would be mid-pack even with the best teams. And not mentally capable of becoming a Hendrick, Roush, Gibbs, etc. no matter how much money you pump in.

The NASCAR “Sportsman Division” was started in 1950 to give cars more 3 years old a place to race. This was a short track (smaller than a mile) division.
In 1968 the series was named “Late Model Sportsman Division” and moved to some of the larger tracks.
In 1982 Anheuser-Busch became the primary series sponsor with…..yep BUDWISER. The cars were power with V-6 motors.
In 1984 Anheuser changes the brand to from Bud to Busch.
Then, in 1986 the name was changed again to the “Busch Grand National Series”.
Nothing really changed that much until the mid 90’s when the V-6 power was fazed out. After 1995 no teams have run the V-6 power, even though as of today, they still can.
In 2003 the “Grand National” was dropped from the name.
Now at the end of the ’07 season Busch is gone………….Who will be the next series sponsor?
I guess my point is…….If NASCAR cant figure out what this series is suppose to be, then how can we expect the fans, drivers and team owners to know.
Its only been recently that NASCAR has changed the schedule to bring both series together at the same track on the same weekend. It almost appears that the BUSCH series has become a warm up race for the CUP cars.
I think the reason you see so many CUP drivers dominate in BUSCH is because their teams have more resources ($$) and can afford to use the race as test session for the main event.
I believe until NASCAR dramatically changes the rules and/or the schedule you will continue to see the Bushwackers taking the prize money and the spotlight that is so dearly needed by the up and coming teams/drivers.
I blame NASCAR management for the lack of fans and new names on the JV team.
Rumors say ’08 could introduce the “Wal-Mart Racing Series” OMG
That’s just my opinion, which with an additional $5 will get you a cup of coffee
