The record books will remember a foreigner winning a NASCAR race in a foreign land.
The team will remember a bittersweet trip to victory lane.
Montoya stole the lead from his teammate and polesitter Scott Pruett after making contact that sent him flying with 8 laps to go in today's Telcel Motorola 200:
"We were both braking about the same ... he kinda stayed wide so I went for the inside and when I was there he turned and I had nowhere to go ... I'm really sorry for him ... but ... you know ..." *shrugs shoulders*After the incident, Pruett restarted 17th and made his way up to a 5th place finish. Pruett retaliated after the checkers by running Montoya down and giving him a nudge. He was less than pleased:
"Of all people to take you out ... your teammate. I mean that was just no good, low, natsty, dirty driving. I can't even put it into words. It's just so disappointing. We talked about it and talked about it and talked about it in meetings ... if he was faster than me ... you know ... we can work it out and he can go ... but not take each other out. That's just bad driving."Montoya's crew chief, Brad Parrot, wasn't too happy either. He struggled to hold back the tears during a post-race interview:
"I'm upset that we wrecked Scott Pruett. Scott's got a great team ... I'm glad we won the race, but I'm really upset that we took out our teammate ... Juan's got a long way to go ... he's a great driver, but you know ... he's gotta get his head on ... I'm not saying he don't have his head on, but we had plenty of time to get by Pruett. I'm real proud of Juan and the job this Texaco Havoline Telcel Dodge team did ... I'm excited, but then again, I feel for [Crew Chief] Brian Pattie because we've worked hard to try to build a team that can work together. It's tough."Gonna be even tougher now.

Montoya obviously is not a team player. NASCAR does not need drivers of this type. The team should be looking for someone new and replace him as soon as possible. Scott got ripped by the "I" in Montoya.

Montoya has no place in NASCAR if he is going to behave in this manner. This is a team sport, and if one can not display common sense, maturity, team work and professionalism, then maybe that person should find a different line of work. Granted, Montoya is not the only one that is a dirty driver, but for NASCAR to allow a newcomer to behave like this on the track just re-enforces the behaviors allowed by others who really should already know better. It is because of these drivers, who wreak havoc on even their team mates, that NASCAR is slowly going down hill. Maybe not everyone sees it this way, but honestly some people do not belong on the track. Just my opinion.

Puh-leeze! I am not a Montoya fan, and I do admit that he probably could have been less agressive and waited a lap or 2 - but this is RACING for petes sake! Its nice to see someone competetive enough to want to go out and do what it takes to win, as opposed to some of these other guys who say 'He had a faster car so I let him pass'. Ha - if thats the case, make em prove it! Thats why we watch racing, and it was nice to see a road course race that didnt lull me to sleep. Nascar needs that level of competetion, if they could get it on the Nextel Cup level it might make the races a bit more exciting. Not to mention that it wasnt 100% Montoyas fault, Pruitt is an agressive driver himself and he clearly didnt want to let his teammate pass - and for that I also say BRAVO! Let the boys race, people!!!!!!!

i have seen this happen between cup drivers and team mates before..it's nothing new. It's NASCAR...it's racing...come on people quit picking on the guy. Seen Gordon, Kenseth, Jr., Edwards, Vickers...many others do this in different ways. GET OVER IT.

I am sick and tired of all of the hype surrounding Montoya. The announcers, under orders from nascar wanting to build an ethnic fan base I'm sure, Sing his praises constantly. It doesn't matter if he is running last or first it's Montoya this and Montoya that. It's pathetic and I have heard his name all I care to. No other rookie gets this kind of focus...ever. His accomplishments in F1 and Indy cars mean exactly squat in Nascar. Until he has proven himself here (and that means more than one win) how about we spend as much focus on him as any other driver. I don't like or dislike Montoya, yet. I was waiting to see how he raced, just as I do with every new driver, but the constant jamming of him down my throat is making my mind up real fast.

Nascar does not need a latino anything. California Speedway quoted in a recent LA Times article that the speedway attendence is lower than previous years and that they think that having a latin driver in Nascar will boost a latin population at the speedway. Let me tell you something we the non-latin population in Southern California can't go to very many events whether it be sport, festivals, farmers markets, Disneyland,County fairs, the zoo with pleasure. We are infested with latinos and the only event we can still attend without a bunch of latino's is the Nacsar races at the California Speedway. NO LATINO'S IN NASCAR..............

There is a difference between just racing as racing - and spinning out your teammate who also happens to be the second fastest car on the track and already talked to you about getting out of your way once you were up to speed.
Montoya showed that he doesn't care about Chip Ganassi Racing, his teammates, or anything other than himself. I feel like he obviously bought into his own hype and believed that he just HAD to win this week no matter what the cost.
I don't care spinning guys to pass when they're not your teammates, but you're the member of a team when you're on the track and Montoya just didn't care about that this past weekend.

The problem with the Montoya/Pruett incident rests sqaurely with Ganassi and nobody else. He told a reporter there were no "rules" about driving/winning. He said he just hoped the two drivers would not take each other out. Well, for a team owner that was not so smart. Hope is not a method. Montoya wanted to win on road course and in a latin country. That would - and is - huge for him and NASCAR. For Ganassi not to have made it crystal clear to Pruett that Montoya was coming and that both drivers should have had clear instructions on when Montoya was to overtake Pruett is an insult to basic team racing smarts. How in the heck did Schumacher win so many races w/o incident? Ferrair gave orders. Ganassi failed to do so and as a result he failed his own team. My guess is it will not happen again. And as for Pruett, no doubt he is pissed off. And, as for Montoya, he could have been more judicious. But that is racing. Suck it up and don't make the same mistake twice!! Got it Chip? There is a good chance that Ganassi Racing wins BIG and OFTEN this year in NASCAR so let's get this behind us sooner than later. We need anoter very successful team in NASCAR and Ganassi Racing is it!!

if anybody was actually watching the race, and ALL the re-plays they would see that Montoya had the inside line and Pruett tried blocking. if you wanna see an up and coming driver keep your eye on the 42 car. I'm a Stewart fan, but i know talent when i see it, and am able to view ALL angles openly. Like what # 11's comment was, we can only hope that Ganassi lets this drop and can look forward to a great season.
P.S.
if they want to 41 car to go good, put Reed Sorenson back in it.
thanks for listening lets go racing

i dont want to hate the guy but its just like when jeff gordon started driving thats all you heard i want to see montoya drive and then make up your mind if you like him ,he made a mistake hope he learned that fender has to be up to his door to make that turn his that was pruett's corner and nascar has to stop pushing drivers on the fans. we can decide if we like him with out every race being reminded he is out there.

Great comments thus far on the Montoya win in Mexico City. Some of the more negative comments indicate a pretty shallow prespective of just what NASCAR has become and will be in the future in order to stay competative in the world media. But then that is the American way and the new generations miopic view. By going international we are going to see new drivers from other countries compeating and winning, and you want that! The "Good Ol Boy Network" and fan base needs to prepare for this eventuality. It's good for NASCAR, It's racing and while there is no I in team, It is one car, one driver and one winner. NASCAR is anything but a team sport. As for the pass and crash between Montoya and Pruett on Sunday, Pruett had already been passed twice by Montoya who had the far better car all day. I have not seen two many NASCAR drivers that could successfully transition to Formula 1. Too many right turns I guess! So think before you discredit Montoya as a rookie drver. And for those of you who don't like the international flair coming to NASCAR, Get over it!

Pruett should come run to ovals with NA$CRAP, but don't get injured 'cause NA$CRAP only pays the first $30,000 of the medical bills, just ask Jerry Nadeau.
Make me wonder how they can fine an "Independent Contractor" for cursing during an interview after a race? I guess the France family still wants to have slaves.

Well we talk about Montoya wrecking Pruett at Mexico, no body make a big deal about Jimmy Jonhson hiting Gordon at Texas I think, well Just beacuse Montoya is Colombian, doesn't mean is no able to be a good racer, he won the race that's what it count for Chip Ganassi Racing Team, give the guy a break, and then we will see..Go Montoya,, win for Us Boy..
