So far, a change of pace and scenery looks good on Mark Martin.Yeah, I know ... NASCAR *robbed* him of his first Daytona 500 win last week ... but with a second place finish there and a top 5 finish in California, Martin has taken the lead in the Nextel Cup standings for the first time in four years.
Too bad he's only scheduled to run 22 races for his new team. Or was. Since his (almost) success at Daytona last week, he has added the Pepsi 400 to his calendar, too.
Martin insists his early success won't change his mind about running a full season ... but if he continues at this rate, maybe Ginn Racing can twist his arm?
After all, this is their first taste of the lead, too. And Martin's teammate and former driver of his #01 Army Chevrolet Joe Nemechek currently holds the 7th spot in the standings. Can't Regan Smith split the season with him instead?
I'm betting a potential run at the championship could make a difference for Martin. After 19 years at Roush, to win with Ginn would be a heartbreak to be sure ... but could anyone blame him for trying?

Congrats to Mark.
They said on the race broadcast Sunday that the team had already told him they'd find a car for him to drive if he wanted to drive more. At this rate, he's never gonna retire. I haven't quite figured out if he is really ready, though.

I wish he wouldn't relinquish the car at Bristol but it truly is his decision. I think he's tired of chasing a trophy. He has so many already I think he see's racing in a different aspect. He loves it but maybe the drama is a bit much anymore.

I definitely can't and won't blame him!! I'm NOT a Ford fan, but even when Mark Martin was driving Fords I wanted to see him win a championship! Now that he's in a Chevy, I'd like to see him win even more so! Yeah it would be a little heartbreaking to the Ford and Roush fans, but Mark Martin is one driver who deserves a championship no matter what he's driving!

"I think he's tired of chasing a trophy."
I never thought of it like that, BA. He loves racing and not having to worry about points might take a load off of his shoulder and make him want to continue on at least part-time.

Mark is looked up to by sooo many people. I have been watching NASCAR as long as it has been televised. I have watched every race I could make it to the TV. During the last Daytona 500, I found myself standing up cheering for Mark to win the 500, boy was I wired! I think everybody (even if you have a more favarite driver) loves Mark somewhere in there!!! He is NASCAR when we think of people like him, we are thinking NASCAR, there needs to be a special trophy or something that should be given to Mark.. I don't know what!!

I've been a Mark Martin fan forever and am very happy to see his early success this season. However, I am disappointed that he has decided not to run at Bristol. I feel that a partial retirement in a highly competitive and expensive sport is not a viable option. This is not fair to the owners, the teams, the drivers, the fans, or the sport. I hope to see him at Bristol. If he doesn't "Chase the Cup", what's left?

I was a Mike Martin fan until he went to a Chevrolet. Jack Roush was going to give him a full time ride but Martin wanted only part time. I think that if he takes the full time ride that he is a trader to Roush, and I personally do not want to see him win any races. Nice guy or not, he has been going to quit for two years now and Jack Roush has kept him on. Where is Mark's loyalty!! I know he is having fun!!
